We'll be in New York in June and my Mom wants to see Ground Zero. I found a walking tour - but she has trouble walking very far. Is there some way to view it (preferably with a guide) - and perhaps visit a museum or something without doing much walking?

We went to Ground Zero a few years ago.. (3/17/02) - about 6 months after 9/11..... We were in NYC for St. Patricks Day and the parade... that's why I remember the date..

There was a deck on the north side of the site.. Right next to a church and a cemetery (There are only 2 cemeteries on Manhattan) .. We were able to stand in line and wait our turn.. and walk up on this deck - which overlooked the whole "construction site".. which is what it looked like that that time. They were still searching (and finding) bodies then... so we were advised not to spend much time down on lower Manhattan because the air quality wasn't really good yet.

At that time, there were also still signs everywhere.. from the people who were searching for their missing friends and relatives. It was a very very sad, solemn time.

If you go there.. try the north side of the site... and be sure to go to Battery Park, because the "world" art thing that used to be in between the two towers is moved to that area now.. it's about 3 blocks East? Toward the water and the fort. It was pretty there, and you could see the Statue of Liberty from that area.

I hope you have a great time..

I walk by the World Trade Center site all the time. You can walk down liberty street right beside the site and take the stairs up to the World Financial Center which is right beside where the WTC used to be. There are a few photos on the fence facing liberty street that might be of interest. However there are no guided tours of the site as they are constantly working to make way for that hideous looking Freedom Tower they are trying to build in place of the twin towers.

As far as i know, there are no guided tours of ground zero, and there is no museum. The closest that you will get to any of these is if you go into the world trade center path station, and look out over what is now a construction site. Have fun on your trip, I hope this helped.

If you go on Church Street there is a little exhibit there, above the PATH station. There is also something around the corner, a museum of some sort, but I'm not sure where, apparently they have a lot of stuff from the Towers in there. I'm sorry if I'm not helping that much.
