this sometimes happends. I take blood from people every day and there are just some people who clot faster than the blood will flow into the tube (or bag in your case).

Sometimes when you donate blood, if the nurse sticks the needle in your arm and the blood starts flowing into the bag and if the needls moves, it can move out of the vein (which would make no blood go into the bag) so therefore its flowing into your arm which would produce a nice bruse.

That's what happend with me one time. I was giving blood and only had a little left to go, and the needle moved and it stopped blood flow into the bag, and they 'fished' around and couldn't find the vein anymore and i got a really big bruse. They couldn't use the blood to donate (since the whole bag wasn't filled) but they could use it for blood testing so i guess i helped a little.. lol

Sounds as though the blood was not flowing quickly enough and clotted in the catheter(needle) that was in your arm. That stopped it from draining. Did they stick you again? Unless they tell you the lab studies they did before the donation are off, it's not a problem with you.

I wouldn't worry...it was probably a bad needle stick. It happens time to time.
