how old are the dogs are they coming of breeding age. get them fixed is always a good ideas... but if they were playing maybe your dog just had enough. i have brothers and they play very rough but some times the weaker of the to will get down right mad at the other. because his front leg will hurt and he will turn nasty and lay in to the other. i stop this if i see him go into the fight mode, befor eanything happens. i would try agian but make sure both dogs are somewhat tired..take them for a walk together....

First off, was it actually a fight? Sometimes playmates have squabbles and fake fights that were originally in the wild meant for them to learn how to fight with non-threatening opponents. If it was actually a fight that involved injury, it could be several things. Maybe one of them got too rough while playing, and a fight broke out. Also, there could be a girl dog in heat nearby, or they might have just been trying to figure out who was dominant. If the lab was originally the alpha, your doberman may have wanted to give it a shot. It's nothing "personal" (using that term loosely, lol) between the dogs. Or, maybe they just stopped getting along, like people.

Maybe the play got too rough and he got angry. I have a two hounds, a blood hound and a red bone hound. They are the best of friends but DAILY they squabble, sounds like they are tearing hide off each other (they aren't)...they start playing and get progressively rougher until one or the other gets mad.

If there was no blood involved it may have sounded worse than it was. Are they both neutered? If not, then it may be due to establishing dominance.

if they are both young adults and were pups when they started playing together , then they could be feeling their oats as young males, are they both neutered?
