Amanda, I Seem to be on a roll with the tattoo questions so here goes, as for the foot, it is uncomfortable ,but tolerable, it is in an area where there are major bones which will feel the piercing of the skin and the needle. there are several layers of skin that must be penetrated to ensure that the tattoo will be retained and it is dependent on the heaviness of the tattooist's hand. all of these in unison must be considered when the decision is made. As for the comparison question, take a needle or a straightpin and stick yourself ? Imagine that at a very high rate of speed for an extended period of time, this will give you the best type of comparison for what to expect. It comes to a state of mind and does become tolerable after a few minutes. Be committed to the entire procedure so as to insure a quality product for yourself.

Tattoos affect everyone differently. Yes, it hurts. But it all depends on your pain tolerance. I have several tattoos including one on my foot. I thought the foot would be pretty sensitive but it didn't really hurt any worse than the others. To describe it, my foot felt like it was being carved. Push a fingernail hard into your skin and drag it across the area. It feels a little bit like that to me. But that's just how I experienced it. The good thing is tattoos on the foot are usually fairly small and therefore don't take too much time. I have an image the size of a matchbook and it took probably 30 minutes.
All in all if you want it bad enough it is completely worth any discomfort or pain. I am always so excited that I don't even care it hurts. It may hurt for a few minutes, but you'll love your tattoo for the rest of your life!

Since my next tattoo is going on my foot, Ive asked this question many many times. After asking my tatoo artist, his reply was "after I get married, my wife and I are buying each other tattoos, both of them are gonna hurt really bad, mines on my neck and hers is on her foot. So if you cry, I promise not to make fun of you." Coming from a tattoo artist Id say that the foot is gonna hurt pretty bad. But if you want it bad enough I dont think the pain will be a problem :)
As for comparing a tattoo to anythign else? It depends on the person really. For me, the outlines feel slightly less irritating than a catscratch and slighlty more irritating than a slapping a sunburn. And filling it in just feels like someone drawing on you with a ballpoint pen.

Hi, I have a pretty big flower on the top of my right foot. I can tell you that it did hurt! The main problem I had was trying to keep my leg from shaking and jumping, it was doing it just automatically from the needle going over my foot bones and touching the nerves. I guess they must just be extra sensitive there. I have tattoos on other parts of my body and that never happened with any of them. The tattoo guy was playfully "yelling" at me to stop shaking my leg, but I was holding it with both arms and it wouldn't stop! lol! At least he did a really great job on it, even under those circumstances!
I got it over 5 years ago and I still love it just as much as the first day I had it. I buy sandals with clear tops for the summer and it looks so cute! I get lots of comments on it.

My best friend actually had a tattoo of a dancer on her foot a week ago. It hurt for a bit but then she just got used to the pain. Of course a tattoo would cause some pain...it's a needle. Her foot hurt more afterwards.

Hey Amanda, I have only had the outsides of my biceps tattooed but the closest thing I can compare it to .....it's like having tiny little sparks falling down on you over and over. They go out as soon as they hit the skin...but there's always more of them falling and hitting.. It doesn't hurt so much as it is annoying. The next day (and for about 4 to 6 days later) its going to feel like a sunburn. The key is to relax, listen to music or talk to a friend to distract you. Use the best artist you can find. go to my 360 page and click on the dragon tattoo in my blog, then click it again. My dragon was 12 hours old in that picture...no scabs..no bleeding.
I am doing 8 to 9 hours under the needles next month so I've been doing my research.....here is the best article I could find on pain as charted by body location

I hope this helps

I got one on my toe...it hurt a lot. I have three tats. One on the big toe, my lower back and on the inside of my right wrist. The toe hurt the worst. Can't really compare it to anything...
But umm...I should also warn you that some tattoo studios don't do foot tattoos. My friend and I wanted matching toe tats...and we were turned down by two studios. Because maintaining the quality of foot tattoos are difficult because of the "abuse" of everyday life.
I'd actually suggest reconsidering

I have 2 tattoos... 1 about 4"x2" on my lower back (black) and another 1.5"x1.5" on the top/side of my foot (color). I seem to remember the lower back hurting more than the foot.... but I think the black parts hurt more than color. it basically feels like a bee sting.... but about 10 times/second - and that lasts for as long as it takes to get it done. You kind of get used to the feeling for the most part... only a few squinting moments =) If it means anything, these 2 aren't my last!

i had a tribal flower put on my foot last month (it was my very first tat ever) i was terrified because everyone said it would hurt, but no one described how it would hurt...... ok here goes, mine only took 30 mins but initially when it started i said its hot? and it continued to burn through most of it..... the worst part for me (because i was told it would get numb after a little bit ) was that my skin wasn't accepting the ink as well as it should so when he kept going over the already tender spots and it still felt like a burn.... not terrible by any means I am scheduled to go back next week for a touch up (with black ink its sometimes hard to tell that is gets everywhere good because the ink runs a bit). and i am already scheduled for my next 3 tatts latter in the year.

in my personal experience (5 1/2 hours for two tatoos and a touch up) it really really really hurt. it really isn't comparable to anything. it is just a severe sting. because there is no meat between the skin and the bones and the skin is so thin it just really really hurts alot. BUT obviously it didn't hurt too badly for me not to get the other one done. i got my skull done in june 2006 and my box in december of 2006. i don't have anymore feet, but if i did i would get them tattooed too!
