The Bible is not to be taken literally, and that's why you here these so called "excuses."
They aren't excuses, they are logical arguments. Unless you can refute them, you have no business talking!

You are making some generalizations about Christians aren't you? The Christians I know agree with the bible as being the inspired word of God and while some have interpreted certain scriptures to further their own view of theological ideologies, the bible doesn't need anyone to make excuses for it.
How many Christians have actually read the bible (all of it) ? Do you really think that anyone can answer that question? I personally know of hundreds of Christians who have done exactly that several times over? Is there a point to your question? Not all of the bible is to be taken literally...the bible says Jesus was the Lamb of God. Do you think that means he was a sheep? I don't suppose you know that it is so easy to see right through the disingenuiousness of your question? You don't really expect anyone to give you an answer that would give you a sense of intellectual enlightenment do you? Why don't you just get on here and ask everyone how many people think Christians are as stupid as you think they are? Haven't you got something more productive to do with your time than to display your intolerance and ignorance of people different than yourself?

First there are many different interpretations of any given book in history. Evolution has many different theories. Because Christians sometimes disagree over what a passage in the Bible says or means, it does not mean that it is not right or accurate. Use a little common sense, not lay out unrealistic arguments that I doubt you can back. Have you read every book on Biology? By your reasoning then you should not discuss evolution
Gemma says it is illogical and scientifically impossible for the Bible to be literally true, yet I know of not one scientific fact that disproves it. It is also scientifically and logically and mathematical impossible for evolution to be true, but many believe it.

The bible itself is full of contradictions. Probably because it was edited so many times by Kings of the old world, when only the rich elite could read.
Entire books of the bible have been left out as well, for whatever reason, maybe they held to many scary truths about the true nature of humans, i.e The books of Adam and Eve and the book of Enoch.
Personally although the Christians mean well, they are extremely brainwashed and scared into thinking the bible is the true word of God and that everything should be taken to it's most literal of meaning, which is usually taken out of context, anyway. They fail to realize how many currupt human hands have touched the texts since they were discovered.
Many have not read it all. I tried, but the begots in Genesis got to be too much. ( Abraham begot Noah... who begot... who begot... who begot... etc) I assume very few have actually read the whole thing cover to cover and rely on the teachings and small references given to them by preists and pastors who are relying mostly on teachings and small references given to them from preists and pastors before them...ect..

I don't think all Christians are like that. Christians, like most people, aren't perfect and do make mistakes. It's just when they do secular people are quick to jump on them.
For those who do make excuses, I think it's a matter of maturity. They justify their actions and do not change, whether it's because of pride, fear, or whatever.
I haven't read the whole Bible from cover to cover if that is what you mean, but not all of it should be taken literally. For example, when Jesus was talking about fasting, he said anoint your head and wash your face. What that meant was you shouldn't even appear to be fasting. Don't make a show about what you are doing.

Good Question. Too many people use the Bible to prove their religion. The Bible is where you find it.
New Christians are very zealous, but are babes feeding on milk and many are into false Gospels who wear a Christian tag.
Most all heart Christians have read the Bible.
I myself have been reading it since 1979. My first six years I gave up TV and movies and studied 5 hours a day.
I said this to say , I am still discovering things.
Don't judge the Christian, that's between them and God. Where will you spend eternity?
Try reading it, I would first pray for a desire and pray before reading. If you're serious, get a good concordance

Many Christians, who paraphrase the Bible, are only spouting what they are told to think. They are told what it says to be truth.
They are taught to not think for themselves, because their own book tells them a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. They are taught to not question, just have faith. They are told what to believe about certain subjects, by their church/pastors/priests.
Perhaps people like the questioner here keep asking such questions to get Christians and others to actually use their brains and give due consideration to the questions instead of giving "pat" answers. There is nothing wrong with using your brain to weigh all the possible answers instead of just believing everything you are told to believe.
BTW, I used to be a Christian who actually studied the Bible. Notice, I said used to be. I am no longer a Christian because actually studying led me to search out the truths in other avenues, such as science, literature, alternative belief systems, and opened my mind to all sorts of possibilities.
Perhaps that is why the Churches tell their sheep to just have faith and not question. Questioning leads one to seek answers. Answers can lead you away from the Churches. Churches would then lose the monetary support they need to continue.

I didn't realize this was just a Christian problem. I've noted the same thing with other religions. Personally, I think it's a human problem and has nothing to do with religion. People get the same way over the government too. I love it when people start to spout off about their rights and yet they seem to have no idea what is actually in the Bill of Rights and what isn't. You could actually take this one step further and ask how many people have really sat down and read the fine print of just about anything they claim to have working knowledge of, like their credit cards, mortgages, etc.

First of all you need to read the bible. Also if and when you come across any so-called Christian that does not use the whole bible ,run;because any thing they tell you is a lie.Psalm119:160 tells us that all of Gods word is true.Understand that some parts of the bible are literal and some is figurative.the authors who use figurative language did so to make their point understood. For example some one may describe a beautiful woman as a tall drink of water.Does this means she looks like a glass of water? That is why you need to read the scripture in its entirety to know what is being said and why.

Funny, when a Christian does take the bible literally and agrees that it is all true s/he is dismissed as being a crazy fundamentalist that can't use the brain in their head for free thought.
