By the dictionary, religion is defined as:

A set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. "Religion" is a man-made institution. It can be good or bad, depending on the people involved in it and what they are committed to, but it is not in and of itself good. The devil sits in church pews and lectures from pulpits all over the world. Religion is not the same as Christianity, faith, grace, or any of the other things that truly matter. I have known many "religious" people who were doing their own will rather than God's. The Bible says, "Not all who cry, 'Lord, Lord' will be saved." Your heart and soul have to be in it.

A human answer to the idea of God. To me, God is an incomprehensible being that human beings interpret in human terms. All forms of worship of God are determined by human nature and human culture.

Religion is the adherence to codified beliefs and rituals that generally involve a faith in a spiritual nature and a study of inherited ancestral traditions, knowledge and wisdom related to understanding human life. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to faith as well as to the larger shared systems of belief.

The development of religion has taken many forms in various cultures. "Organized religion" generally refers to an organization of people supporting the exercise of some religion with a prescribed set of beliefs, often taking the form of a legal entity (see religion-supporting organization). Other religions believe in personal revelation and responsibility. "Religion" is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system," but is more socially defined than that of personal convictions.

it is a human attempt to describe what cannot be told. it is an attempt to trancend transendence.
The best things cannot be told they attempt to describe what cannot be described with words.
The second best are misunderstood because they attempt to describe the best.
The third is what we talk about.
there are many folk religions they all attempt to describe God using there local metaphor and cultural referances. They all are the same at there very core because all humans are the same at there very core. But God trancends religion.

Even if human not created in the world, the religion is already there. The living thing, such as animals, trees, mountains etc, they have religion too.

Neither, its one man's way to contol those around him. Simple as that. The sad thing is that those religions go on for decades and centuries being led by the very people who were once the sheeple.
