Me! It was FABULOUS! We went to Malta (we were stationed in Sicily at the time) and had planned on going home with the wedding stuff. But we eloped to Malta and it was the best time ever!!!! We did what we wanted the whole weekend. No his parents/my parents nagging, cousins complaining, blah blah blah!
Nope! We spent less than $1,000 and got a luxury room, went gambling and had the most romantic wedding night. We saved a ton of money!!
Anyways, people always plan hard on the weddings these days, instead of the marriage. The point is, what works for you two, will work for everyone. If not, to heck with them! Do what's right for you!
Congrats!

I am in the middle of planning a wedding and always thought I wanted a big wedding. Now that I actually see the stress it causes I wish we would have just eloped! Do it and save yourself a headache!

I tried to talk my fiance into eloping last fall. My family is not very traditional and doesn't tend to get together a lot, so I was apprehensive about planning a big "to do". My fiance didn't flat-out refuse to elope, but I could tell that he was hesitant about it. Over time, I came to realize that having a wedding is very important to him and his family. So, we're having a "wedding wedding" this summer. I've been working through my apprehensions because I respect the fact that this is important to my sweetie and his family. Now I'm looking forward to our big day!
More info than you asked for, I guess!

My sister planned her wedding at a couples only resort in Jamaica they had the parents and the best man-maid of honor (who were dating) and a few of us couples that were family.relaxed for a few days waiting for the license, had it all there at the hotel in about a half hour. Native flowers, a few people from the hotel a bottle of champagne small cake- all provided by the hotel. (parents saved a bundle!! we used what we would have spent on air fare for an out of state wedding and hotel not to mention bridesmaid dress, and tux for the trip and we all got a vacation out of it to boot!) Beautiful When they came home they had a reception/party and didn't worry about a thing. They were done-no jitters, worrying that it wouldnt be perfect or up to someone elses standards. I should have gone that route.
On another note - on our way back from that wedding, we met a couple who eloped and didn't tell their families. They bought T-Shirts that said " We got married at Hendoism in Jamaica" and wore them off the plane for their families to see! What a blast that was to watch.
Best of luck to you! It's your day - do it the way you want!

I'm a product of a couple who eloped. I would've almost preferred to elope, but I got (somewhat) the wedding my mom wanted.

My husband and I talked about having a big wedding. It was not our first marriage, but we had both been single for several years. It got to be a huge headache, so we decided to fly to Florida and get married on Sanibel Island. It was fantastic and I wouldn't change a thing. A wedding is nice, but expensive and can be disappointing. Congratulations and good luck! I am sure you will love it no matter how you do it!

Vegas in 2000. Still going strong. We didn't even bother talking about a big wedding. His family hates my family and my family fails to give a crap.
