I agree with everyone else in that you should go for it. I have asked someone out and been rejected so I can give you a good game plan to follow. First, ask once and just be friendly. If they say no, continue to be friendly and do not let the rejection change the way you interact with this person. If he is your friend now, continue to be his friend. By keeping it together and remaining cool, you come out on top and leave the door open for any future opportunities.

Nothing ventured nothing gained. I would just come right out and ask him. You could just ask him out as friends and see where it goes.
