Easy. Buy an electric car. You won't get one from a major carmaker, but there are nonetheless several choices. Just don't expect to hear about them from the government or the media.
*
For the budget-conscious, try a used or converted electric car. These can be had for as little as $5000 (heck, I bought one used from eBay for $2000.) You'll get a freeway-capable EV that looks like a normal car, but has a short driving range. See this page for some links.

Also take a look at this very cute little car that only costs $10,000 new (not freeway capable):

And now, for the ultimate electric car:

*
The Phoenix can travel up to 250 miles per charge, carries 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph, charges in only 10 minutes, and has batteries that will last well over 200,000 miles (for the life of the car.) Yes, it's a real car, orders have been taken and they begin building cars this month.

After I saw the film, about 2 years ago, I had so many questions I have been looking for answers ever since. One objection I have to the film is that it follows a modern journalistic practice of giving a hearing to two sides of an issue even though one side may be weighted much more heavily than another. I think this weakens the ending of the film. If you are interested in conspiracy theories the petroleum industry has an interesting past that goes much deeper than the successful conspiracy to eliminate US electric street cars.1 Although the hand of big oil is not so present in the film, after the cars were crushed it was Chevron that acquired the world wide rights to the successful NM HI battery and worked to give us hybrids and keep the batteries from any purely electric cars.2 There is at least one place I have seen a reference that the the rights to the EV1 design were subsequently sold to a "major oil company." Unfortunately this remains little more than an unconfirmed rumor. Seventy percent of refined petroleum products are used in the transportation industry. An electric car does not use oil, not as a fuel or as an engine lubricant that must be changed regularly. Oil companies have posted the biggest profits in all of recorded history. 3 What height of moral standard would be required for a company not to spend all its extra cash on protecting 70% of its market? And then we see references that we would be better off based upon pollution, cost and efficiency to just leave oil in the ground.4 And that an electric car could travel further on the energy used to refine a gallon of gasoline than a gasoline car could go using the refined gasoline.5 Go figure.

The oil industry is not stupid. As long as there is oil, there will be NO incentive to develop alternative fuels or industries. Once the oil starts to run out, the oil companies will scramble to develop hydrogen technology, where they build and sell the equipment, especially maintain and repair it, and re-invent the oil industry into a new industry. They have WAY to much money invested in oil at this time to simply quit. They will not let the money stop flowing, they have plans already for "plan b".

i own a shop, and we as individuals cannot control what the bigger companies do to kill or shut these smaller companies down when they come up with a good idea,we all know who controls the most of things, the larger car company's do,everything they do affects what we do,in one way or another ,if you had the resources you could build your own car,and market it,and then get investors ,you might could make it work,,but it would be a hard battle to do,good luck,i hope this help,s.
