I want to acid-stain my concrete floor. My house is built into a hill, so I have a lower level that steps up several feet to a platform from where a staircase leads upstairs. The room that I want to acid-stain is off of the platform. Originally this room was a basement, so the wall is about 4 inches from the end of the concrete floor. The original re modelers filled in the gap with a 2*4. That was fine under carpet, but proves to be a problem now that I want to beautify my concrete. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I would not fight it, I would actually try to use it as part of the overall design by painting it a complimentary color and either antiquing it or stenciling it or something that would blend in with the style you are going for. Never let an obsticle stop you, use it to your advantage and it will become special. Red with black stain wiped over it and stencilled with vines, flowers or stars for country look or using a tyle design, make a stencil to use from plastic. It'll be fun. Good luck.

I agree with Miss Mary about using it as a decorative edge. So, I have an additional comment on using the wood as a trim. One, it sounds like this wood is only on one side of the room and, thus, letting is show is going to give that feeling like it was the afterthought it really is and two, it will give the room an "unbalanced" feeling. So, I would sand and seal it so you get the smoothest finish on it possible. Then paint it a really striking complementary color and continue that strip of color all around the room. You could even paint the strip so that it looked like stone or tile to look even more like a beautiful trim around the room. Here is a link on doing faux terra cotta tile. You may not want terra cotta, but just change colors. The technique would remain the same. Sounds like a fun project!

Hi there ,
I think i might know what you saying , lol you need to turn wood into cement ! cool , i Like a good challenge .
Well you can see if the garden centers have a stepping stone to adapt and seal it with cement crack filler , Or you can get a bag of ready mix and build a little frame for this area and poor it youself , drys pretty quick , or , the 2 x 4 can be salvable , put a coat of primar like kitlz and put a layer of joint compound thinly on it , when dry , sand off the rough edges and put back in place , then fill your cracks in with a cement crack filler , and a coat of cover for cement ( to make it real hard ) then you should be ready to go , , But i think i would just make a lil frame and poor a lil cement in it , ther are a lot of options ,
wish you well . im me if you need ,
