It wasnt bad at all...however, today I am having an abscess like pain in the tooth right beside the one they canalled. Also, the one they canalled kind of feels like an abscess as well.

Is this normal? I hate dental pain and it is driving me insane! Surely the one beside the canalled tooth couldnt be abscessed seeing as how they done multiple x rays yesterday!?!?!

Yes, it was the first visit, they done all the file work and put a temporary filling in. I have to go back to get my permanent filling put in and then eventually a crown.

Having pain after the procedure is very common that's why we tell patients to take a pain med before the anesthetic wears off and continue to take them over the next few days. It usually takes two days on the antibiotics to get your blood levels up and for you to start feeling the effects. The tooth and the surrounding tissue and ligaments have gone through a lot with just the filing process of the root canal therapy not to mention the abscess that is still there. The tooth itself may not have a nerve but the surrounding tissue and the ligaments that hold the tooth in place are very much alive and responding to the excessive stimuli that was involved in your treatment. It can even make you feel like you have another toothache, which you probably don't. In the meantime take the pain medication every 4-6 hours even if you don't think you need it and about 2-3 hours later take 600mg of Advil or Motrin which aids the pain med's effects and helps to reduce the inflammation caused by the abscess. Just give it some time, in another day or so you'll feel much better. When you go in for the root canal filling procedure you will experience some pain similar to what you have now, but not nearly as long or as intense. Hope I've been of some help to you and I do understand. Had a couple of them myself.

It could be referred pain -- the network of nerves is very dense and it's not always possible to distinguish which tooth is causing the pain (it might not even be a tooth, could be jaw or skin that was traumatized by the procedure.)

That said, you should get in touch with your dentist as soon as you can and have it checked out. It may be normal (I had one that seemed to take forever to calm down, to the point where my dentist sent me to someone with more sophisticated imaging equipment to be sure he hadn't missed something). But it could also be further infection, as it seems to you.

It's always worse on the 2nd day, but hopefully will subside some by tomorrow. Same with wisdom teeth, you think you will die on Sunday (if you got them out on Friday) but by Monday, all is well.

Is it the first visit? when I did mine they drilled it out the first day, then I went back for the little file work. But had no pain.
call the Doc and when you go in, they may have nicked your gum and cut you.
