I have been shocking everything and everyone lately. I don't even have rugs, so I'm not sure what's causing it. I got up to change the channel on the satelite tv box today and gave/recieved a shock so bad that the receiver shorted and reset itself. How can I rid myself or my house of static?

It is a good bet that the air in your house is dry this time of year. We always generate static electricity when we move, but when the humidity is high, it bleeds off. Not true when humidity is low.

If you want to protect yourself from shocks, carry a piece of metal in your hand, like a coin. Touch things with the coin. You will not feel the static discharge. This is because the current flows through a larger surface of your hand, as opposed to a single point when you touch the object directly.

You live in a very dry area, and your shoes and clothing are good insulators. Something is preventing static charges from leaking back into the ground as they normally do. You can try adding fabric softener sheets to your clothes dryer, use moisturizer on your skin, and conditioner in your hair. Try getting new shoes, new socks, or wear sandals. In the case of your TV box, that probably means the TV is improperly grounded. You might want to get a surge protector strip, like the one you have for your computer.

Hope that helps.

You might also want to check the plumbing outside your home and make sure it is connected to a grounding rod.an average grounding rod in a residential setting is about 5 to 8 feet driven directly into the ground and connected directly to an outside water faucet by solid copper wire.the rod is also copper.dryness may be the culprit, but do not rule out an elevated radio ground plane.sort of the other end of an antenna.

The best way to get rid of this problem is to bring up the humidity in your house. You can buy a humidifyer pretty cheap.
