Excellent question! The answer is YES, too many are on antidepressants. Why? Because doctors who have no business to prescribe antidepressants are handing them out like candy. Why? Because they are drug whores for the drug companies, they get kick backs, benefits, etc. Pretty sick, but very true.
We are becoming a country of zombies. No one is working on their problems, but they are zoned out on pills. I saw a recent study on what happens to people on antidepressants, they can't really deal with their life adequately, no surprise there.
Antidepressants were meant to be taken for short periods of time to get someone through a traumatic episode and with supervision by a trained professional. The truth these days is rarely is someone monitored on the meds and people take them for many years. Only those with serious mental health issues need to be on meds for long periods or life. The average person dealing with depression does not need to be on them unless they show signs of a deep clinical depression and cannot function or are suicidal. Even with clinical depression, drugs are not always necessary.
Yes, friends, family and having a good relationship with God would certainly help a great deal. When those aren't enough, a professional who could do talk therapy to find out the root of the depression, is very good.

I will agree, it does seem like everyone other person is taking an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety drug. Drs seem to be getting a little carried away with writing out these rx's. Trust me, I used to work in a pharmacy! People seem to think they are a cure all for everything. When in reality the feelings or problems they are having are just associated with everyday life and how it is.
Now I will say that I do take an antidepressant and have been doing so since I was a teenager(10+ years). Back then dr's required people to seek the help of a counselor/therapist first to determine if the drug is really what is needed. (which I did see a counselor) That's not the case anymore at all. They'll write out the rx after one visit!!

I think people with chronic depression have tried everything but meds first. If you have ever been in a deep depression you know what I am talking about. It's not something you can just "shake" off. It is an actually chemical imbalance in your brain. This is what the meds take care of coupled with counseling if you prefer.

People want a quick fix without hard work and they believe meds will provide that. Their desperation for this quick fix instills a blindness to the downfall of meds and prolong use of them as well as a mixture of them. Meds are fine for a short term cure but taken for an extensive length of time will do more harm than good.

I agree. Spirituality, nutrition, a support network and exercise are the best ways to cure mental illness. An anti-depressant may numb pain, but it also may numb life.
