We have a 12wk old Yorkie-Poo who we leave in our kitchen when we are not home. We are not gone for extended periods of time, a couple hours here and there. As soon as we put him in the kitchen he barks and whines, which can be very loud. For the past couple days he seems to have lost his voice and is very hoarse.

Is he doing harm to himself by barking so much when we are gone to the point where when we come home has lost his voice?

Any suggestions on how we can help his anxiety? We assume that this is something he will overcome, we just want to be sure he is not causing long term harm to himself by barking so much and so loud. Thanks!

Leave him alone for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes and so on and so forth until you can work up to about an hour. Then leave him home for an hour and a half, two hours, two and a half and so on. He just needs to know you will come back. Make sure he has a kennel or some other area he can call his own and have a blanket or two in there and some toys, it'll be comforting. Play a radio, or keep a TV on during the day so your house isn't silent.

Would it be possible to stop in at your lunch time, or have a neighbor stop in for a few minutes of petting and a bathroom break? That would ease the anxiety a lot too.

If it continues, talk to your vet.

Also, barking won't hurt him. It's like when you go to a sporting event, scream, and then loose your voice the next day.

no barking will not harm him at all. i can suggest leave something in the kitchen that belongs to you with him while you are out maybe an item of clothing. also a good thing to do is leave him in the kitchen when you are out, this will help him. hes just young and has a few anxiety issues

Being a puppy and being left alone will cause the puppy to bark and cause the throat to become a little sore, But it is not anything to worry about.Unless he has completely lost his voice.Try putting toys in the kitchen and fresh water.May be his bed or some thing it really like.Try your old shirt or blouse.May be the smell of you will comforted the puppy

Well, he's probably not doing any damage to his vocal cords, but you are doing damage to him by letting him do this. He needs to learn that he can be left alone for certain amounts of time. If you have ever heard of the Dog Whisperer, I definitely reccomend reading his book, "Cesar's Way," by Cesar Millan. He also has a show on the National Geographic Channel named The Dog Whisperer. You will find that many of his techniques will work for you and your dog.

Good luck, and I hope that you have better luck with your dog.

Barking comes natural to help protect his territory if felt threatened

Dogs will quit barking when their mouth gets tired and dry.
