With every puppy crate training is very important.
-You want to get a proper fit crate. I would recommend one that is for all life stages. So you can buy just one crate. You want him to be able to turn around, sit, stand and lay down.
You do not want to let him have any food or water in his crate. Also do NOT put the puppy pads in there as he will get confused.
You may give him a toy such as a Kong or a Natural bone. Stay away from rawhides as they are unhealthy for dogs and puppies.
He should only be in his crate when your not home or can not watch him closely.
The crate is NEVER to be used to punishment. It should be a happy and safe place that he wants to be in.
-You want to take him out as soon as you let him out of his crate or 15 mins after he eats or drinks.
Reward him when he goes outside! Give him a treat and lots of loven.
NEVER shove his face in his mess if he has an accident. Also NO HITTING it will make him aggressive.
Just use a strong WRONG or BAD BOY! Then take him right outside.
-Now for him not wanting to come in after he is done going potty. Have treats ready. Call him to come. Say his name and then come. If he does not answer you go closer to him and repeat until he comes to you. When he does say GOOD BOY! and give him praise.
-Now for feeding him you want to make sure he is on a healthy puppy food. Nothing that contains Corn, Wheat, Beef, By Products or Fillers. These ingredients are very unhealthy for the dogs and puppies and hard to digest. Some examples of bad food are Iams, Purina, Science Diet, BilJack, Kibbles and Bits and Alpo.
Good foods are Natures Recipe, Nutro Max, Lassie Natural Way and Royal Chain.
I personally recommend Natures Recipe as they have it for all life stages. Natures Recipe is all natural and is completely healthy and easy for your puppy to digest! It leads to a healthy body and shinny coat. Natures Recipe also cuts down on shedding, bad breath and the amount of stool they produce.
On the bag it will tell you how often and how much to feed him.
-NO HUMAN FOOD! Not a good thing to get him started on as it is unhealthy for dogs.
- I would also recommend training classes. St. Bernards can make wonderful pets if they are trained well at the right age.

I have NO idea why your breeder would recommend an adult food for a puppy... Your saint bernard needs to be on a large breed puppy formula. I think Nutro large breed puppy is a great food, and i think your st. bernard will do well on it. And sometimes puppies sleep a lot after they get their shots. Like kids puppies can sometimes get a low grade fever, which makes them more sleepy. And puppies also just sleep more than adult dogs, just like babies. And he doesn't come inside right after going to the bathroom because he wants to play!! All puppies love to play. I think you should do some more research on puppies so you know what to expect. Good Luck, and have fun with your new puppy!! I LOVE saint bernards!

At 11 weeks old I would except a pup to be asleep more than awake. All they do for the first 3 months of their lives is eat sleep and go to toilet.
Feed a puppy food for large breed dogs until he is at least 18-24 months old. He will grow until he is that age and needs the calories and minerals puppy food provides. Buy a good quality dry food such as Eukanuba, Hills or if can't afford that then purina would be ok.
Don;t get chow and don't go back to that shop if thats what they suggest.

It's not uncommon for the St. Bernard to sleep a lot. Especially right after receiving vaccinations since most dogs get pretty tired after getting shots. He is also probably just adjusting to his new environment and many dogs sleep to alleviate stress.
Since larger dogs, such as St. Bernards, tend to have a longer "puppy phase" (and take up to 3 years sometimes to fully develop into an adult dog, anatomically), I'd stick with a puppy formula of a higher quality dog food. Purina and Puppy Chow are both lower quality foods. I'd stick with a premium brand (such as Eukanuba) that has a lot of protein content in it.
For dogs, being outside is usually a treat. Most dogs, and especially St. Bernards, love the outdoors. St. Bernards are working dogs and were bred for snow/avalanche rescue, so they, by nature, love being outside. Let him stay out after going to the bathroom. Consider it his reward for going potty outside instead of on your carpet!

First of all you want to put him on Large breed puppy food. Also, you want to give him supplements for his joints. Don't exercise the dog hard for the first year. Those large joints are growing and you don't want to stress them. They sleep a lot when pups. All that growing takes up a lot of energy. He will become more active about 4 mos. The reason he wants to stay outside is Saints love the cold. They are uncomfortable in warm houses. I have a doggie door and its hard to keep mine inside also. Good Luck with him. I currently have three and wouldn't want any other breed of dog. I JUST LOVE THEM. Wait and see you will too.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aUN9b
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

its normal for pups to sleep alot especially after they got their shots they will be really lathargic the first time my jack russell terrier got her shots she threw up and her belly was hurting but i think thats because she was really small but now shes better but ya they get really tiried after shots let him sleep im sure he'll be all right i think puppy chow would be the best because dog food for puppies have special ingrediants that puppyies need as they grow to get all the right nurishments .....i found that iams puppy chow was the best for her ( i also tried this kirkland dog food from costco and i think purina puppy chow and they didnt seem to like it and you could really tell it was bad for them iams is the best ive found with my dogs) . my dog is sorta hesitant about that too but i think he might be scared just offer him a treat to go inside and then he'll understand that going inside is good

How wonderful for you ! A st. Bernard will be a great dog. Puppies sleep a lot - most of the time if they are not eating and playing or pooping. Expect lots of naps and playtimes with lots of energy in between. Feed him a puppy food - one designed for large breeds. It is very important that he eat food for a puppy. If he eats adult food it could cause him to put on too much weight too soon and it could lead to hip, bone problems. I feed my 5 month old great dane pedigree large puppy formula. It is a middle of the road food - not the most expensive and not the cheapest. As far as wanting to stay out with him - he is probablly overwhelmed with new smells and either scared and/or wants to check them out. When he goes out, stay with him and when he starts to go either pee or poop, repeat "go potty" over and over while he is doing it. When he is done, praise like crazy. Repeat this over and over for weeks - and soon he will start to associate "go potty" with the act. Soon you will be able to say "go potty" and he will squat. That is great on a rainy day. I would recommend a crate for your new baby. he will appreciate a den to sleep in and feel secure and it will help cut down on destruction and potty accidents. Good luck
