Damsel is the correct spelling, and it means a young, unmarried woman. I am trying to find the male counterpart for that word… and there is none, other than Bachelor.
Of course there is NO male equivalent for the phrase because society has been built upon the concept that men are dominant, that it would not create a phrase to represent a man as weak.

I don't think there really is a term for it. as the whole thing comes from fairy tale type stories, and it's the mans role to save the damsel (or dame) so traditionally i think that a man in the same distress is just ...well...embarrasing.
