You can do a full install if you have the original however the install depend s on the licence you bought all the installs are in the same disc but only the install licence you paid for will activate. For instance if you bought up grade, the disc and serial will only allow you to install the up grade, how ever , all the versions are in disc in case you change your mind and dish some money for corporate or full home edition etc.I'm sorry I miss the question, but when you installed vista you had the option to keep your old windows in case or need to go back so all you got to do is look for that option and reinstall, however , if you chose not to save the old then you must start from scratch.

Not familiar with Vista installation but Windows gives you trouble if you put an W XP cd in and try to downgrade from Vista. If this is an upgrade to Vista maybe there is an option in Control Panel to remove Vista. If not then boot from XP CD and format HD and reinstall XP.

Save off all your files, and make note of all your logins, settings, and hardware.
To install XP, boot with the XP CD.
Delete the partition, and let it install XP from scratch.
