Pretty awful here in Buffalo.
Drastic warm temperatures this summer kept Lake Erie from Freezing over until just about now, so we got tons of snow, which we usually don't get (Buffalo has had 2 record blizzards that got TV coverage and therefore we're "snow city" even though Syracuse beats us soundly for snowfall every year.)
Worse, the warm waters of Lake Ontario have resulted in record snowfalls in central New York.
The winter has been warmer than usual on average, but we're paying for that with snowfall totals!

Hi. The cold air from the North is being replaced by warm air from somewhere. Think globally, act locally.

It is snowing so much because the lake is far warmer than normal. That's why they are calling it the 'lake effect'. It is snowing so much because the Great Lakes have not frozen.

"Lake effect is caused when icy, cold winds blow over the relatively warm waters of Lake Ontario and other Great Lakes, convert the water to snow and drop it inland. Since the weather had been so mild until mid-January, the Great Lakes had been unfrozen, setting up ideal, classic conditions for huge amounts of lake-effect snow."
