Nascar started in the South, by southern men who wanted to drive fast, often coming from generations of whiskey runners. I am a die hard Nascar fan and I was shocked at how many black people WERE NOT at the track on race day. Because Racing is considered a "Red Neck Sport", along with all those rednecks come the Confederate Flag, which many black people are not comfortable around, understandably so. The hatred and the racism should have been left behind long ago, unfortunately it is alive and well .

Like any other sport, things will change. I do believe that Nascar will take much much longer though, not many black people are interested in Nascar... from what I have seen (or not seen) at the tracks. Regardless of how much we want to say this USA is a diverse society, we are indeed not, for that I am sad.

I think in the grand scheme of racing there really isnt all that much interest from the black community. It could be rally racing, drag racing, F1, IRL, Champ, or Nascar and you have a very low percentage of black drivers. Its not just a Nascar thing its an all over racing thing, just not a lot of interest. It has previously been mentioned that black people have driven in Nascar before and presently are competing in some form on the series. So I guess the real question should be why arent there more black drivers in racing world wide.

So the door is open in every series for more participation from other people other than white people. That goes for every series, every series has developmental leagues from F1, right on down to rally racing so if you want to race and your black get to it.

The NASCAR drivers aren't picked off the street. The drivers come up through many driving venues - ARCA racing, CASCAR(Canadian type NASCAR), super-modified racing, etc. to name a few. If blacks aren't involved in these types of racing venues it would be difficult to be scouted for a NASCAR Truck ride, NASCAR Busch ride or a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup ride. The driver selections aren't based on speculation although some of the recent selections are questionable. Some are made just to make a full racing field.
You could pose the same question as to why there aren't more Jewish drivers. If you could build a car that runs on guilt you'll see more Jewish drivers.

If I didn't have a family that depends on me to me come home everyday, I'd drive. Believe me I am not afraid of speed, I have no need to run from cops, just because I'm black doesn't mean I have a criminal record and doesn't mean I have to have spinners and rims on my race car. I happened to be a bi-lingual (Spanish/English) speaking African American. I enjoy all kinds of music from Latin to Jazz, country and not just rap!

There was only one point that was right about me. As a child, I was never interested in racing. I was more into basketball and tennis. It wasn't until I became an adult that speed was something that fascinated me. I had to become an adult to learn that about myself. Had I known this when I was a kid, today I would be driving in the field with Dale Jr, Jeff Gordon and the 41 other cars on the track. As far as being afraid because it's predominately a white sport. I don't think so! When I was single, I used to go to "all white country bars" and do Line dancing. Yeppers!!!! I would be the only black person in the whole bar and I received more encouragement to keep country line dancing from the people in the bar than I got from my friends. So you tell me whose afraid. Is sure isn't me.

I believe black athletes are the best in the world, but if you mess up in this sport you die, or you kill someone else. Not to many black people in extreme sports. Except for one. James "Bubba" Stewart! I am a big fan of his and I believe he will the best motocross racer ever by the end of his career. Although he says his younger brother is better then him. Motocross is the toughest sport there is and Ricky Carmichal just retired to race Nascar. That says it all! We will see Bubba in Nascar soon. Race teams are already trying to sign him.

Because being black, or any other color for that matter, does not dictate the level of talent to be a NASCAR driver or any other professional athlete.

More blacks must get involved with racing. They must start in the lower divisions first and work up to NASCAR. They also must have sponsors who want to back them.

Because they don't want to. It is always something isn't it? Why is that Some black people make such an issue of Nothing? What are white people suppost to do? Kiss Black People (s) ASSES to get them into Racing? I don't think so!! Get over it for petes sake. Sound Exactly like your pitying yourself for being Black and want white people to also pity you for being black, to compensate somehow. Well, white people don't owe you anymore than the average white person which is nothing.
Get Over it! Be happy with your race... Also for the record I have Nothing against any Black person, or ANY person.
