Pattaya is one of Thailand's most popular tourist destinations and Pattaya will certainly remain to be a popular tourist destination for the future due to the large concentration of especially adult themed nightlife venues as well as its relatively close distance to Bangkok when compared to other popular Thai holiday destinations such as Samui, Phuket or Krabi.
Currently there is on average one new hotel opening per month in Pattaya ranging from standard hotel to upscale resorts. Central Group, All Season Pattaya, Inter Continental, Le Meridien and Mantra Resort and Spa are all currently planning new projects in Pattaya and the surrounding area which should all be ready for opening by 2009.
There are however a few items to consider as well as not all is as positive and pretty as the Thai Hotel Association leads us to believe.
* Pattaya has much lower average room rates then in competing Thai holiday destinations such as Phuket which has lead many investors to choosing Phuket or Samui for example as the location for their new hotel or resort. Fact is also that the amount of new hotels and resorts being planned and build in Pattaya is only a fraction of the number of properties being build at other leading Thai travel destinations.
* Over recent years a number of new travel destinations have emerged such as Koh Chang and Kao Lak which clearly does not benefit the Pattaya hotel industry as some travellers are now opting to stay at one of these destinations.
* Pattaya has a pretty negative image in the travel and tourism sector due mainly to their dependance on tourists visiting Pattaya solely for the adult nightlife as well as Pattaya and its beach being less the clean and tidy. Many tourists prefer the clean water and beaches of destinations such as Koh Chang and Krabi
* The Thailand travel industry including the hotel industry as a whole has suffered a lot over the last years. Every year there seems to be some new event or happening such as the December 26 2005 Tsunami, the recent Government coup, recent bouts of the bird flue and Sars as well as the bombs the other month in Bangkok and the many bombings and shootings in the South of Thailand. This has had dramatic effects on the tourism business with tourist arrivals going up and down like a jojo, Regular tourists to Thailand have started to choose for other destinations which do not hit the news frequently with bad news.
This has left hotel owners and management with no way of planning and budgeting for the future and many hotels have struggled to break even over recent years which is why there has been a noticable increase in the number of hotels and resorts available for sale as owners simply cant see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I have visited Pattaya many times , on my own, and with my family. Pattaya is trying very hard to become a family resort and clear it's name as just a 'seedy resort'. Sure the bargirls are still there, but they are no more skimpily dressed than your average Westerner on a European Beach. Unless you go inside a gogo bar you won't find any nudity. The beaches aren't great , Jomtien is certainly better than the main beach. You can go anywhere on a songthaew (pick-up taxi) 10 baht standard rate around town. My personal choice of hotel is the Diana Inn on second road. A lot of expats who live in other parts of Thailand use this hotel when visiting Pattaya for a holiday. If you have some money to spend try the woodlands hotel, at the quiet end of Pattaya . Tripadvisor will give you plenty of info and reviews of hotels. Just a tip if you are going off-peak or for a lenghty stay 10days or more you might be able to negotiate a room rate discount. Have a good holiday.

It is still a growing industry. If you pay a visit there, you will find new hotels and resorts sprouting out along the southern coastline. Many developers are cashing in to build up in the area when the economy recovered from the slump some years ago.

I am not sure of that. I think other cities in Thailand, such as Hua Hin, Rayong, Phuket etc will take over.
But other places in Asia also starts look like Pattaya. Sihanoukville in Cambodia is one of them, and Nha Trang in Vietnam is on the way too.
