For me, I'd prefer the family ring. This is worth alot to the family, and it has alot of sentiment behind it. Later on in your marriage, for an anniversary, he could buy you a diamond ring. One you could possibly give to your children. Wearing the family ring could bring you closer to the family, or his mother. If your fiance decides that he would like to buy you your own engagement ring, why not get one that can be passed down as well, a special yet unique ring. Start your own traditions together.
I think his mother does like you, and this is a good thing.

Many people opt to compromise and do both! You can use the stones from an heirloom ring mounted in a new one, melt down the metal from any heirloom jewelry and have it fashioned into a new one, or have new stones mounted in an antique ring. There are many options!
I'm guessing that most women would choose their answer based on STYLE. If the antique ring is a ring they love and would like to wear forever, then they would probably opt for that! However if the ring isn't to their liking, they would appreciate the gesture, but would probably rather have something they liked.

I am getting married next month and I have a store bought ring. If I had the choice I would definitely say a heirloom. It means so much more knowing how much love that one ring has seen over the years. I will be giving my ring set to my first born when they meet that special someone. I appreciate that I get to start the tradition.

My when we talking about getting married *that cute stage in a a relationship between dating and engagement* I always told him Id be happy with a ring from a quarter machine.. lol.. I got a sparkly new ring he picked out. I love it.. I would have loved that little plastic 25cent ring he couldve gave me too though.. lol
Im not sure how Id feel about a family ring.. Id be afraid to lose it or damage it or something.. who knows. I completely respect the sentimentality behind it but Id be too nervous.

honestly, a ring is a ring, it's the meaning behind it that counts.. if i had been given the choice i would have picked a family ring, that way it could be passed down and start a family tradition..
and if it was his mom's rings, then i would definately have to say she likes you ;-) (it's a good thing to have nice in-laws, makes marriage so much easier)

If you like the rings from his family, use them. If he would rather give you a new ring, let him. You already have the Mom's rings, so you could wear those on your right hand, and the one he gave you on the left. Congrats!

Giving you a ring from his family is the ultimate gesture of acceptance and love. Giving you a new sparkly ring is a gesture of beginning your own tradition. What matters most is how much he loves you and you love him. There are no strings attached; just the one to his heart. Many blessings.

Hmmm... I guess it would depend on what the ring looked like. I do like the idea of sentimental value, but when it comes from someone else's family it's not particularly sentimental to you, although it would be to him. I will be wearing my grandmother's wedding ring, which is of great sentimental value to me, since it comes from my side of the family.

I think a family heirloom is a beautiful gesture! And one I would treasure above a new one.
Your mother-in-law (or future) must have a lot of faith in you to trust you with her heirloom - and just imagine when you pass them along to your children the story you'll be able to tell.
And that doesn't mean the sometime (sooner? later?) you can't have that new sparkly ring to wear on your other hand!

Ordinary solitaires don't do much for me. I took him shopping and I pointed out the style of rings that I like, and then I set him loose. He did a really nice job of designing a ring with a jeweler.
