because i downloaded a movie and i try to play it on my windows media player and it says i cant because it doesnt play that file, i tried opening it on media center and that doesnt either. it only plays mpg. so can some one tel me how to change the file or how to play the file. i need major help.

i do have the newest updated windows media player. and it stil doesnt. and wat is DivX? and how do u get it?

Dave i did what you told me to do. and it still does not open. it says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file" how do i change the codec?

The windows media player will open avi files, but those avi files must be associated with the windows media player. Right click on the file, choose properties. The dialog box will open to tell you what program is associated with that particular file. If it does not show the windows media player (located in the windows directory), choose the change button and navigate to the proper EXE file for windows media player.

DivX player, some DivX movies are file stamped as avi.

it works on windows media because AVI is the new windows movie codec. your WMP needs to be updated try getting the new version 11 or atleast version 10
i play AVI on my WMP all the time.
