depends on how traditional the family is.... but when in doubt, yes - ask her father. It could be upsetting if you don't but they won't think any less of you if you do.

It really depends on the type of family, but it is always a nice gesture to do so; the parents will have respect for you if you decide to ask their permission first!

If you aren't sure, try asking your girlfriend's other family members (brother or sister for example) if that's something their father has ever mentioned or would appreciate.

I know that when my daughter starts dating my husband expects to be asked if it ok for the guy to take her out never mind get engaged. It is very important to make a good impression and I think that being respectful to parents is a big thing.
Good luck by the way.

While it certainly isn't required or expected in this day and age (that was in the days when women were considered more like chattel and went from being "owned" by their parents to being "owned" by their husband), it would be a lovely sign of respect to the parents and certainly earn you huge points in their minds. My second husband asked my father's blessing and I was in my forties and living 1300 miles away; the divorced mother of 2! My parents adored him--hadn't even met him--because of it.

i don't have a very great relationship with my father so my son-to-be-husband asked my mother. i think i was more touched with that then the actual proposal. My mother and family are a extremely important to me and I'm glad he involved all of them into that special moment when they actually couldn't be there. Why stop with the father, ask the family.

I think it is all different now a days, and although it is not necissary any longer, it is a very thoughtful gesture, and very much appreciated by the bride to be's family. Especially her father. OF course he has to keep it a secret, so when you propose it's a surprise. :) How ever you choose to do it, i'm sure will just fine. But if you want to earn extra points, do it the old fashioned way. :)

My husband did it. It gives a Father a great feeling of respect when a boy decides to go it "old school". It also shows her that her family is important to you as well. Her family will see there girl is going to be with a man who may have an ounce of moral fiber. Go for it, good for you!!

I think her father and she will be tickled pink to hear that you did that.

My fiance did that to me. He called up my dad before we went on a cruise and asked permission to marry me. He then proposed on the cruise. I said yes and as we were in line for pictures he told me he called my dad and asked for his permission! I started tearing up again :)

Are we still in the dark ages? I'm sure if you have been dating for a while this is not going to be a big surprise. Just be good to her.
