When my son turned four my sister-in-law gave him a wallet with money in it. This turned out to be a wonderful idea. It has tought him that things do cost money and it has tought him to keep track of things. He has had his wallet for four months now and he still has money in it. Everytime he gets a dollar he has to put it in his wallet.

That home made play dough thing sounds great I would make him like 3 colors and rite down the recipe for mom or dad and let the child know he can make some more with mom and dad maybe a crafty day!!! so put the play dough in containers with the recipe also buy them some neon food coloring! look on line under home made play dough. Parents love toys that include the whole family kids love that time as well

I love giving books to kids just make sure they are age approproiate. At age 5 he is probably just learning how to read so he might enjoy reading about his favorite things. I normally give a Toys'R'Us gift card also. Just like $10 so the child knows s/he can get a toy too. Also with a gift card it gives the parents a little flexability (do they have tons of stuffed animals, or really like board games etc..) Some of my favorite books are great to read together and still fun on their own..
"The Giant Hug" by Sandra Horning
"Cha Cha Chimps" by Julia Durango
"Bear Snores On" by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman
Good luck!!!!

The gift my son got from his aunt and uncle that he loved the most was tickets for them to take him to go to the Circus. Kids LOVE the gift of time. Last year they took him to Chuck E. Cheese then bowling. You may want to think about that too!

But if that isn't possible or you want to get hims something to open, get him somthing fun. He's surrounded by learning all day!

Rescue Heroes are great - they are very fun and no one can object to them, as they aren't associated with any type of violence.

My son LOVES the ones that have a grappling hook with it!

FisherPrice also has an Imaginext line that he loves most everything from (there is also a very cool line of Dinosaurs!)

He also loves the Playmobil pirate's line and the Playmobile castle.

All these things can be found at Toys R Us, Target, etc.

You might consider some interesting art supplies, spirograph, play-doh, car stencils, those markers that make neon marks on black paper...if he is inclined that way at all. As a parent, I could spend a fortune on things like that and but don't because they can be very "here today and gone tomorrow." They always get used and are a nice alternative for a child who has a ton of toys. Games and books are nice also.

I've always gone for books. 'Course, that's just my personal preferences coming out.

I would opt for some fun but educational or active in some way. Perhaps puzzles, card games, ball-and-glove set, that sort of thing.

If you're tight on money, you could make him some homemade playdough, package it in a jar, and include some kitchen utensils from the dollar store. Boys and girls will play for hours with that sort of thing.

How about a fun puzzle or game - my 5 year old daughter loves the game Mousetrap & that would be great for a boy. Something like a kite would be fun or just a big poster for his bedroom.
