We haven't seen my sister in eight years, but recently she has used my mother's birth day to get credit cards. What do we do? Is there somewhere to get a free background check, find out where she is currently living???

if she only used her birthday, then it probably wont affect her. if she is using her mothers name or social security number, then that's illegal. if your mom gets a copy of her credit reports, she will be able to see if anything has affected her credit, and what address your sister has put down. your mom will want to put a fraud alert on her credit report, and if something your sister has done is on them, call each credit card company , and explain it to them. your mom may need to file a police report. what your sister is doing is illegal, and can have far reaching consequences for your mom if it is not stopped now.

First of all, if she's getting credit cards in your mother's name she does have her social security number. You can't get one without it.

Secondly, identity theft goes much further than credit cards, she could buy major things like cars and loans. If she were able to obtain a fraudlent ID, well the birthdate may give away, but she could get you mother's name in a lot of trouble if she used when dealing with the police. It can be real damaging.

Freeze the cards with the company and call the credit bearu. File a report with the police. Don't worry so much about the background check, you can find what city she's living in just by looking at the monthly statement, it shows where the charges were made.

If I was your parents, the first thing I would do is contact the Credit Bureaus and freeze their credit. What this means is they put a freeze on their credit report which means that companies cannot inquire into their credit to approve them for anything without their permission. Most companies though don't look at birthdays, they look at social security numbers so she might have your mother's social number. Your parents also have the right to know where she is living because she is getting credit cards in their name so the credit cards must know her address because they had to have sent the cards somewhere. You can also go on Yahoo and Aol find a person and try and find her address that way. Good Luck....

tell you parents to get a free credit report to see if there is anything there that your sister may have used if it's only a birth date that has nothing to do with your mother I'm sure thousands of people have the same birth date but if she used her SSN that's a whole different story

If all she did was to use the wrong birthdate then I would have your mother call the credit card companies (she must know which ones if she knows it has happened,) and remind them it is not her. IF they argue with her then she needs to ask them to send her original signature card and also a fraud package.
Good Luck
