I know chocolate is poisonous to dogs but my Jack Russell loves the smell of my Chocolate Options drinks and keep trying to stick her head in the mug to get a taste!

I made her up a little dish of hot chocolate with lots of milk in it to make it cool and she loved it!

I'm just worried though because there is a bit of cocoa powder in the hot chocolate mix, will this be dangerous?

It was only a one off treat. I wouldn't do it again it was just that she was so fascinated with my chocolate drink! I thought it would be ok because I only gave her a very small amount with a tiny bit of the powder mix in it. She seems fine. She has often had a dish of plain warm milk and she really likes it.

As a general rule, giving dogs chocolate on purpose is NOT a good idea. The problem with chocolate is the theobromine and the caffeine content. Theobromine, if ingested, can cause hyperactivity, vomiting/diarrhea, increase urination, irregular/rapid heartbeat, seizures and tremors. Caffeine content can also cause hyperactivity, rapid heartbeat, tremors and seizures as well. When it comes to chocolate and dogs, here are some helpful guidelines for how much is too much:
Milk Chocolate - one ounce per pound of body weight (more is harmful)
Semi-Sweet Chocolate - one ounce per 3 pounds of body weight
Baker's Chocolate - one ounce per 9 pounds of body weight (this is the most dangerous of all)
The other issue I see is the milk you're adding. Dog's do not possess the enzyme that is necessary to digest dairy products. It's not a deadly thing, but you'll suffer some concequences, nonetheless. Fragrant diarrhea (or terrible gas build-up) may very well follow.
As many others have mentioned other harmful foods, here is my own laundry list of dangerous foods:
- alcohol (duh)
- anti-freeze (duh again)
- avocado (can be lethal - guacamole too)
- broccoli (can cause upset stomach in large quatities)
- grapes/raisins (just 6 grapes CAN kill a dog)
- raw eggs (Avidin in it can cause major deformations)
- fatty foods (can trigger pancreatitis in prone dogs)
- liver (can cause vitamin A toxicity)
- mistletoe (in larger amounts, generally)
- mothballs (duh)
- nuts (can cause bladder stones, and many other debilitating conditions)
- green potatoes (contain solanum alkoids that can be dangerous)
- Plants (like rhododendron, azalea, oleader, rhubarb, cycads, yew, and other houseplants)
- nutmeg (can cause seizures and death)
- onions (one small onion can contain enough thiosulphate to kill a dog)
- salmon (especially raw, can cause salmon poisoning disease that can kill a dog within days)
- salt (can trap gas in the intestines and kill a dog)
- sugarless candy/gum (xylitol can cause liver damage)
- tomatoes (contain atropine, a dangerous substance)
- yeast dough (will rise in the stomach and can cause a rupture in the stomach or intestines)
- fruit pits/seeds (apple seeds contain arsenic ... so do peach pits)

You know that chocolate is really bad for dogs.- The real reason is that dogs are not able to proccess chocolate apropiately so it results toxic for their organism,( they don´t have the gastric juice and enzimas needed to "digerir" chocolate) Ask your vet doctor about "cascarilla" (I don´t know to say it in English, but I think that is part of the cacao seed, the shell, that is not so "aggressive" ) In my country, Uruguay, many children drink it .- I´ve never drunk it but many people have told me that is similar to chocolate taste.- I think that it would be good to give some similar to chocolate taste to your dog milk and he will enjoy it not having risk to feel seek later.- It worth if you know that your dog likes that flavor so much.- I try to make my dogs feel happy too, so I understand your feeling.- Good luck. I hope you find "cascarilla" wherever you live, if not try to come to visit my country and take one kilo of that stuff as a present for your best friend, only if your veterinarian doctor agrees.-

Babe they all love it but you shouldnt give your dog to much chocolate even hot chocolate, It is poisoness to them and kill them. Cocoa is the problem because it affects their system and kills them. If you feel the need to give her a treat now and then that is ok but dont do it often. Why dont you get the little chocolate buttons from the pet shop and give her some of them, they dont contain cocoa. I bred dogs so know what I talking about babe.

Chocolate is deadly to dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.

I hate to tell human beings this yet canned nutrition easily has fewer preservatives than dry nutrition because of the fact the canning technique is the main significant way the nutrition is preserved....even however, in case you feed a low high quality nutrition like Alpo, Purina, Pedigree, technological information nutrition regimen, Iams/Eukanuba, etc that's amazingly probable that they contain risky preservatives and different factors like chemical compounds, fillers, by using-products, etc. in case you feed a top high quality canned nutrition like Innova EVO ninety 5% meat formula, you're able to be reassured which you're feeding your puppy no longer something yet human grade cooked meat supplemented with supplementations and oils. there is not any distinction in feeding this nutrition than cooking a fowl your self different then you definately do no longer could discover the time and freshen up the mess afterwards. So, to respond to your question...feeding canned nutrition isn't undesirable because of the fact a human grade meat nutrition regimen is nicely good for canines.... do exactly no longer feed low high quality canned nutrition considering that's the place the disadvantages lie. desire this helps.

A little bit of chocolate WILL NOT kill your dog! It's not arsenic people!!!
I have no idea why this myth is so prevalent.
IF you give your dog a bunch of dark chocolate - yes - she could die. Same if you eat a TON of dark chocolate yourself. You could die too. It's more dangerous for a dog cuz they weigh less.
A little bit of VERY diluted chocolate - which would be the same as hot chocolate is NOT gonna hurt her!
LOL

I don't believe that chocolate is poisonous to dogs, because my dog has eaten a whole pound of chocolate in one day, and she's fine. She didn't even get a little bit sick. Hot chocolate is watered down, so I think its fine.
