The car has 225,000 miles and brand new tires (less than 6 months old). 4 doors. The car no longer runs and the towing fee was $160. Is it reasonable to put an ad in the paper for $160 ( what it cost us to tow it to the shop and have them look at it) and they tow it away? Or would it be a waste of money?

The shop said it would be $3000 to fix it and the car isn't worth it so we just want to get rid of the car and get a new one. I've had it since I was a junior in high school and I'm 24 now. =(

Has the shop told you how long you can keep it there before charging storage or having it towed off? If not, it'd be something to ask them about, and let them know you're going to sell it, one of the technicians may buy it from you Some will only allow it to sit there for a certain length of time if they're short on space, others are very easy to work with and will let you leave it there for a longer time.

If you have some time to sell it, and it's in good shape other than not running, put an ad in the paper for $400 or best offer listing it as not running, needs work. You can tell potential buyers what kind of work the shop told you it needs and that it is at the shop if they wish to look at it.

Even for scrap metal it should be worth at least $150 to $200 right now. There may be some want ads in the local papers and classifieds looking for junk cars, one around here is paying $175 for junk cars right now (they come and pick it up) and there are probably some like that in your area too. This would make a quick and easy sale if you want to get it gone fast.

Just because it doesnt have compression in #4 doesnt mean its junk its probaby a burnt valve and can be fixed rather cheap if you can find someone around there to do it! My advise if you need the car is buy a used head from a salvage yard and have it put on! Good Luck And by the way i say used because a new head on a old motor will suck the piston rings causing you more problems.

Go to KBB.COM so you can punch in the specifics and it will tell you. Maybe it won't have the option to take away one cylinder, but you'll get an idea.
