They feel like they have better things to do. When i was in high school my room was a mess too. Now that I'm married and live on my own my house is spotless. it might just be a control thing also. They don't want to clean their room because YOU want them to! Lol.

Teenagers do not have a since of responsibility because they simply don't care. They have no pride.

No amount of yelling, grounding, or rewarding would do the trick with my son.

This is what I did that changed everything:

Together we went through his room from top to bottom. We threw away stuff, & made a Goodwill box. His room was totally stripped. Then we cleaned the walls, carpets, & shelves. Together we chose a new wall color and painted. Cleaned the carpet and WE purchased new curtains, sheets, and bed cover. When everything was brought back in the room I let him decide how the furniture should be arranged. I taught him how to clean, fold and hang clothes. Everything had a place with plenty of shelves to put them away. From that day on he was responsible for doing his own laundry. Mom was not his maid anymore.

Because he had to put forth a lot of effort to clean his room and the fact that I let him make some decisions he developed pride in the way his room looked. I gave him a tall clothes hamper to throw all his stuff in he didn't want to put away during the week. When the hamper got full he had to put it all away. The floors staid clean of snakes, mice ,spiders and smell. Dirty clothes went directly to his hamper in the garage.

Mine was always untidy. ALWAYS. I was just a messy kid.... I was always clean... I dusted and vacuumed, but as soon as I was done vacuuming, all the dirty clothes went back on the floor lol. They think now the reason I am like that is because of my mental illness... I like to see everything spread out, etc etc.

On the other hand, my sister, and my 2 best friends (one guy, one girl) were always sooooo tidy. They never had anything out of place. And if I moved something, they would come in and put it back where it belonged. So not all teens are messy... it just seems like they are!

some are lazy
i cleaned my room today, but only because it was disgusting and smelled
it still smells but the opened sunflower seeds are picked up off the floor and my clothes are in a hamper and not spilling out of the closet. if you find a teen's room that is actually tidy, then they're daddy's little girl.

I was always messy as a kid; I'm not TERRIBLY tidy as an adult, although I'm better than I used to be. I think it's a matter of priorities; many teens just don't see a tidy room as being a particuarly important thing in their lives.

they are rebelling in a safe little way, it's no big deal. I could barely walk through my room when I was a teen, but now that I'm an adult and on my own I'm a neat freak. Be happy if that is their only rebellion and not something more self-destructive.
