I think the Apostle asked the same question, but put it a different way:
They were will to die for the truth.

Your right, what is the point of living for a lie? To find the truth is much better. The truth sets you free! In the sense that once you know it to be true, then you can act upon it and do something about it. for example If you believe in God, then wouldn't it be important to find out what his plans are for you and me and the rest of the human race? People use the Lords prayer every day, but do they discern what it says? Most people just read the words without putting thought into it. Well try reading Mathew 6:9,10 take it apart like a clock and then read Daniel 2:44 and revelation 21:3,4 See Revelation 12: 9-12 to understand who is the lier.

If you tell a big enough lie and state it as fact you can get others with less brain power of their own to follow the most ridiculous things. Theories that "CANNOT" be proven will find the most influential people to follow along just to show they are "progressive" and "in the know". It's still BS and can't be proven. Living a lie makes others think that they know something that they don't. Let's take Evolution for an example, High Society jumped on this bus not because it was true, but because it was new. They wanted to appear as smart and knowledgeable. Many know that it is bunk but the lie grows and consumes their lives to the point that they can no longer free them selves without loosing face.

The point of life is to persevere in it attaining eternal life and a rich life with God. all else is meaningless.

there is none.what about dying for a lie?probably less likely.those who doubt the ressurection of Jesus must also believe that all the witnesses of it were willing to die for what they knew was a lie.

People live and die for lies all the time.

Our soldiers in Iraq are dying over a potful of lies right now. And don't get me started on the Christians and the stuff they've killed and died for...
