Because Christians believe that Atheists are the devils spawn and will burn in hell. They are intimidated by the intelligence and lack of ignorance displayed by atheist, and therefore feel threatened intellectually.

I to am an atheist, use to be roman catholic,
athiest by the word meaning personaly to me, i do not beleive in the church , bible, or god, but thats it,
i am a very open, loving, caring person who beleives there is always two sides to every story, and to keep my mind open, i do not judge others and i hope others would not judge me..i accept people from all walks of life for who they are, and if i dont understand i inform myself to help me understand, that being said, aside from a christian or two, i have never come across hatered, i have a lot of respect for myself and from others.

now if you are pushing your views, or making people uncomfortable with remarks, or you think your way is the only way, then i could see how some people would seem to hate you, but that would be the same as anyones beleif being pushed into your face, now i dont know you, so i can not like or hate you.. but if i di know you it would be based on your personality only and nothing more

I do not hate you for being an atheist. Of course, I can't speak for everyone else, but have you seemed to hate people in the past because they were not atheists? You will reap what you sow, so you should respect people no matter what they believe. Human beings deserve no less than that. Welcome to Answers, friend.

People have had the concept of a God drilled into them for so long that they forgotten that it is a faith, not a fact . Therefore the mere thought of someone not believing the same as they do scares them. people don't like others to put the notion into their brain that they may be wrong. We all have the right to belive what we want. That is why it is called a faith. If there was only one answer, there would only be one religion.

Christians are motivated by love, not hatred. We are taught to hate WHAT is evil, not WHO is evil.

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. -Romans 12:9
