Go to a Board Certified Orthodontist to get your braces NOT a general dentist. Two years is the maximum not the minimum! and 18 years is young enough to get your teeth move faster than any other age! any younger will not help to move your teeth any faster I assure you, and if your dentist is telling you something else, it means he doesn't know what he's talking about. In fact, there is a new system called "Damon System" for brackets, it will get your treatment done in 18 months or even less with less visits and minimal discomfort. You can find a Damon Orthodontist if you enter your Zip code on this web site: http://www.damonbraces.com/
Good luck and make sure you change your dentist!

The reason behind him saying if you were "younger would have been faster" is that you aren't growing at the rate that you were, if your growing at all any more. When you are in a growth pattern the teeth are easier to move due to this. Nothing is set or fused in the bones due to the growth of the bones. Now your not growing and the teeth have "set" in the bones making them more difficult to move into the correct alignment. Sorry but that's what he meant by that. At least your getting them now and two years won't really be all that long. Good luck with the braces, follow all instructions, don't miss appointments or break wires and brackets and you may get out of them sooner than you think!

He doesn't know. It depends on the individual situation. It could have taken longer if you were younger. If you went in when you were too young you might have been in pre-ortho retainers before you started the actual braces. I'd make sure that you're going to an orthodontist and not a dentist for your braces though - they'll do a way better job and get you out faster. Plus they know what they're talking about.

In a younger person, the bones have not calcified as much, so the teeth move quicker; I've known young kids (like 10 or so) that were done in a year. I took nearly three years... I was REALLY glad to have them off, but I'm glad it was done.

My sister got hers at 11 and it still took 2 years, so I don't think it makes much of a difference.

I'm not sure at all but my guess would be that younger people's teeth aren't as settled in as older people's. Don't know if that makes any sense but it's my guess.
