In our engineering class we have to make a rube goldberg like design in order to staple 3 sheets of paper. We must have a least nine steps (in this case transfer of energy) to move the printer paper to a manual stapler and staple it. I am in a group of three other members. We do not want to spend a lot of money...any ideas?

we actually need to build it and it needs to function

oh and the first step needs to be powered by electricity (preferably motors, because we have acess to them, but am open to suggestions)

They have feather touch staplers now. They take very little pressure to use. Whatever you choose to do, a stapler like this would make the last step much easier.

LOL.

The last step HAS to be that a falling object hits the short end of a lever, causing a mallet-like other end to spin around and bop the stapler. That's just required for aesthetic, historical, and humorous reasons, cost be damned.

Otherwise, things that roll down inclines can be cheap and witty. For at least one incline, use as your supports the empty beverage containers of your choice, glued together.

Those are my main quick suggestions.

Study the children's game "Mousetrap". It is based on Rube Goldberg's ideas. His ways were the longest route to accomplish things with ingenious and ridiculous outlandish creations.

Do you have access to animals or small children? Just kidding. Does it need to function, or is it just a design that you need?

I would suggest a visit to your local bowling alley where they might have some old bowling balls you can have for your project.
