My dog just got into a fight at the dog park. She's not a fighter. Now she has a big gash on her neck. It looks like a clean cut, not ragged, and no debris inside (you can see in). It also doesn't seem to be bothering her at all, she's not acting like she's in pain. I don't think it needs to be stitched up-it stopped bleeding really quickly, there was barely any blood on her fur, and it seems like it's not in danger of the skin tearing more or anything. I need to clean the cut though-can I use hydrogen peroxide? Is it safe for dogs? Can I put bacitracin on it after it's clean? I've never had a dog get in a fight, I'm not familiar with doggie first aid like that. Thanks.

idealy it should be treated by a vet. even though the wound doesn't look bad there is a very high chance it will get infected and need antibiotics. The area around the wound should be shaved with clippers to prevent contamination of the hair around it. You can use hydrogen peroxide to clean it. (although alcohol is a great disinfectant it will sting badly-ever put alcohol on your cuts). Also you could do a warm compress (hot water on a face clothe (make sure not too hot to touch)) a few times a day. Let the wound drain.

If it's deep you shouldn't use hydrogen peroxide. if you want to clean it prepare a compress of lukewarm water with a towel. Hold it on the gash and rinse it and replace it every minute or so. If in a day or two it has not gotten any better, most definitely see a vet. I would honestly say see a vet now anyway incase it should be stitched up, otherwise you risk infection an din a few days if it gets infected itll be more serious than a simple cut. Alcohol would be good to clean it but if it's a gash you might cause her a lot of pain.

You can clean it out with your usual, store-bought 3% hydrogen peroxide on a clean gauze or cotton ball. I'd use a triple-antibiotic ointment on it and try to keep it clean and dry. Also, keep an eye on it to make sure it does not start to worsen or develop an infection. If your dog has sensitive skin (or you don't have any antibiotic ointment available, simply put a layer of Vaseline (or generic petroleum jelly) on the area after cleaning it. Vaseline is safe because it contains nothing that will cause a reaction in a dog, and will form a mini-shield over the wound until you can get some antibiotic ointment.

Make the owner of the other dog pay for your vet bills! Make sure the other dog is UTD on its shots. If you are unsure if it is this warrants a trip to the vet. If it is nothing big then you can rinse it off with water and put some neosporin on it. Dogs have good immune systems when fed a good diet and their other health needs are met. So just keep it as clean as you can.

Some say no but if it's a spot she can't lick, I'd hit it with a little peroxide and then bacitracin, but that's me.
(worked for years w/ my cats)
You can also just wash it with some warm soapy water and clip the hair away from it so as not to introduce extra germs.

hey--we have a dog samantha..shes a siberian husky
and she broke a nail--we put bacetracin on her and it worked fine
im pretty sure if you go to pet co they have dog antibiotic creams--like over the counter stuff..
as far as hydrogen peroxide? id say lay off--that stuffs pretty strong!
maybe rubbing alcohol is better to clean it--the other stuff might hurt the dog
and if it gets infected id say take it to the vet immediatly!

You can use peroxide to clean, but according to my vet it needs to be diluted half and half with water or you'll burn tissues. After cleaning, put an antibiotic cream on it and watch it closely for signs of infection.

Check an over-the-counter pharmecy. The would know if a medication is dog-friendly or not. You could also ask a vet or an experienced person/breeder.
