Stopping a Dog Fight

Be careful not to put your focus on learning how to break up dog fights. If you have dogs who are fighting, the fights need to be immediately stopped by management and possibly remedial training. You don’t want one more fight to happen.

Punishment escalates fights and teaches the dogs nothing at all. So don’t punish either dog. Hitting or even yelling while dogs are fighting (or just fussing) can escalate it. Sometimes the best thing to do is step back, stay quiet, and wait. If it’s over in 10 seconds with no injuries, that’s a fuss, not a fight. There may be a lot of hope for remedial training.

Keep your hands off fighting dogs. Grabbing them is how people get bitten. Perhaps you are willing to take that risk for yourself in order to protect the dogs. But it’s worse for the dogs if you get bitten, too! Here’s why:

1. You are very likely to escalate the fight and set the stage for worse fights.

2. Your injury gets the dogs in more legal trouble, as well as more disfavor with other members of your family who will play a role in deciding the dogs’ fate.

3. If you are injured, you may not be able to take care of the dogs. If it’s bad enough, you may not even be able to go to work to earn the money to feed them and pay for their medical care. Dog bites can put you in the hospital, from infection as well as damage.

Rather than using your body, separate fighting dogs with physical barriers. Different things work for different dogs. Some things to try include:

1. Water spray from a hose—or maybe drop the hose between them.

2. Slam a door or make another noise as loud as you can. Try not to break the door.

3. Get a closed door between the dogs (good reason not to break the door when you slam it).

4. Pop open a large, automatic umbrella and get it between them.

5. Block them from each other with a folding chair or anything else you can use without getting your body between them.

6. Spray them with whatever your veterinarian recommends for the purpose.

7. Get a fence between the dogs, or get at least one of them into a crate or dog exercise pen.

8. If you know how and have help, you might need to pry the jaws of a clamped-on dog open. A sturdy wooden stick on each side may make it possible to do this without injuring the dog. In one case, the people separating the dog’s jaws from a smaller dog broke a broomstick and used the two halves.

Infection from bite wounds that can look minor is a risk. After any fight, a dog with injury needs to be checked by a veterinarian, even if injuries don’t look serious.

It depends on the breed of dog, honestly. Water will not work to separate all dogs. If you have a bully breed -- pit bull, AmStaff, Staffy Bull, American Bulldog, etc -- you will need what is called a break stick. And another person. Both should have a break stick. It is a piece of wood wide and flat at one end. You insert that end in the dogs mouth and use it like a crow bar and push the jaws apart. Once you get the release, pull the dogs apart and separate them. Crate one and let the other free, toss one in the bathroom, the other in a bedroom, whatever, just get them separated for a cool down. Pit bulls, and bully breeds alike should not (ever) go for a human, even one breaking up a fight. It is not proper temperment. And a warning, if they are of a bully breed, they will fight to the end.
Dont attempt a break stick on a non bully breed, as it can make things worse. You can use water like suggested, take a couple of pans and bang them together to distract them. Then once released, separate for cool down.
Try and think to figure out what the cause of the fight was, toys, food, space on the couch, that way you can stop a fight before it begins. If you need more help, email me.

A big *** bucket of water or a hose... that breaks them up instantly and keeps you out of harms way at the same time. Even if your dog is generally gentle grabbing a hold of him/her in the middle of a fight can lead to you getting bitten badly.

I have heard alot of other ways, using ropes etc but all of them take alot of time that you really dont have because when dogs are fighting you need to get them apart instantly so they dont cause too much injury to one another.

Water works the best... I have yet to fail in breaking up a dog fight using water.

First, go to the store and get a new deck of ordinary playing cards. Then come back to where the dogs are fighting. Start doing card tricks, starting with the simplest, and advancing to the most amazing. Wait for the dogs to become intrigued by the card tricks. Once they are fascinated, they'll forget all about fighting. It's essential to use a brand-new deck, or the dogs may suspect trickery and bite the h*ll out of you. Make sure you start with the simplest tricks, or the dogs could go into shock.

Whichever the dominant dog is, the one on top, grab their collar. You may have to take the chance of being bitten, but physically separating them is going to be the best way to get them apart. If you have a garden hose, spray them with water, but if you're at a dog park or something, just grab whichever collar you can and get them apart.

Its never good to try to get between two fighting dogs. I have found hitting them with water from hose full blast will detur them. At least it will get them to back off. Hit them right in the face.

use a water hose on them. depending on what kind of dog they are you might have to sit there for a while with the hose on them. some dogs are known to have the lock jaw tendency, which means when they grab hold of another dog, or even a person they cant let go, it not a matter of wanting to. their jaws lock up and then it is almost impossible to get them off.

Depends on the size of each dog. But the best thing to do is not interfere no matter what is happening. It's very dangerous.

when my two adult large breed fight i hose the agressor off with water to the face (hose)as you pull him or her off the other dog by the collar. if the agressor is not wearing a collar take the time to throw a rope or if you have to a belt around its neck to act as i collar.

Dog catcher's pole. It is a long stick with a loop on the end that will tighten. The pole keeps them out of range to bite you.
