Lenswork is a very good magazine. Go to your nearest bookstore and check out an issue. Its not just a collection of camera advertisements. As a gift, it would rank much higher than the camera ad fluff being passed off as photography magazines. It really is a photographers' magazine.

I like Practical Photography. It's a UK mag so it's a bit more expensive, but I like the articles regarding practical aspects of photography. Composition, shooting RAW,lighting, etc. They have a monthly feature I like called "what do you think" where they critique submitted photos. They have a pretty good web site too.
