I agree with oklatom....sensor/fan

To troubleshoot, you can park the car with hood closed, and wait until it starts to get hot. The cooling fan should kick on, and bring the gauge down. If not, you have a issue with the fan system.

Try turning on the defroster/ a/c. If the fan kicks on, then you know the fan is good (and fuse) if the fan still does not turn on, it may be the fan/fuse/wiring.

If the fan turns on, there are coolant temp sensors that tell the fan to kick on and off. Probably could be one of these.

If you get the Chilton/Haynes manual for this car, they will run through what I have stated.

Let me know what happens. You do not want to overheat this motor. You will hurt the motor, and have a 1000 plus bill depending on what you do. I you do not work on it yourself, find someone.
Make a point to not be in stop and go traffic/ lights/ drivethrus as the motor can heat up quick on a warmer day.

To help keep the emps down, put your heater on full hot, and turn on the blower fan.

Good luck.
Also, I would replace the thermostat no matter what you do. They haev a life span of 7-10 years, sometime less, and the 10 dollar part can cost you 3k in repairs if you low up the motor.

the fan

Your cooling fan is not coming on when it's needed. Could be the sensor, the fuse, the relay, or the fan itself. It doesn't overheat going down the road because of the air flow over the radiator.

check thermostate relay. overheats stopped but not driving? fan may not be turning on.open hood while its running and wait to see if fan kicks on. good place to start. my 97 iroc was doing same thing.

Well, first of all to be perfectly honest, ford's are the biggest pos's for people to be driving around in.
