The term missionary is very broad and really just means helping people. Missionaries that travel abroad usually help to set up (sometimes literally build) schools, churches and hospitals in places where there aren't any. They often live there for several months or several years, getting to know the people, teaching in the schools and working in the hospitals. Missionaries usually don't make any money. They are basically provided with a place to stay and food and enough money to live on. Usually the funding for this comes from a church or health organization in a 1st world country (like the USA or many countries in Europe.) Another missionary option is working as a dean (head of a girls or boys dorm) at a school.

A missionary is someone who travels outside their own area to tell others about their beliefs.A very small minority of missionaries are agressive,and force people to convert or refuse to help the poor if they do not convert.
The majority of missionaries give up years of their lives to live amongst the poor,build houses,care for the sick,feed the poor,and try and reform dangerous behaviours such as slave trading,cannibalism and bodily mutilation.They do not force people to convert and they do not withhold care from those who do not.A family I know,for example,have lived in South America for nearly ten years,caring for people afflicted by HIV/AIDS.
They do not 'destroy native culture' or 'prey on the gullible',and
people who say they do might want to look at their comfortable lives,and ask themselves if they're okay with letting innocent people end up as slaves or victims of a terrible disease or mutilation for fear of trying to reform tribal practices.

According to the dictionary I just looked in; a missionary is one that goes to a foreign land to convert people. If ones goal is to convert people (to Jesus) it may be better to get 'practice' in one's own backyard 'over the fence', thru local charitable deeds, etc. first.

A missionary is who ever have the "MISSION", to take the WORD OF GOD, to every mountain, valley, to every corner of the world.

Preparing every person or at least giving people the chance to know the word of GOD, before HE comes and take the believers in HIM JESUS THE LORD AND THE HOLY SPIRIT, to the PROMISE LAND.

i only know of the christian missionaries,but they go and preach the gospel while caring for the peoples needs Jesus sent His disciples into all the world to heal the sick,preach the gospel,cast out demons etc.

From a church perspective it is a person sent by the church into an area to carry on evangelism or other activities for the benefit of the community.

A more generic term would be a person strongly in favor of a program, set of principles, etc., who attempts to persuade or convert others.
