Shakti - The ultimate power -idoled in female form : Durga

The next level down : Three Lords
1.Lord Brahma(with four head) : With four heads who looks over the creation. No temples for him, not so popular

2.Lord Vishnu( the balancer and protector)- who often born as human(10 times so far) to save human kind--that gives the two most famous Gods: Lord Rama with wife Seetha and Lord Krishna
3.Lord Shiva : Who is the detroyer and incharge of the souls
4.Lord Ganesha : Son of Lord Shiva with elephant head who clears obstacles and grants wisdom
5.Lord Hanuman : A big assistant of Lord Rama (in Monkey form) during the Neanderthal era
6.Lord Venkatesha:The latest human form of Lord Vishnu, who has big golden temple with 60,000 visitors a day, more crowded than vatican..
7.Lord Ayyappa:Very popular in one south most Indian state, Kerala
8.Goddess Laxmi Devi: Wife of Lord Vishnu, the goddess of wealth,well..obviously very popular in 21st Century
9.Goddess Saraswathi: Wife of Lord Brahma, goddess of Wisdom and Knowledge

Though not considered a god , Manmadha is the cupid
This should cover the most popular now a days..

The three million gods are not actual gods...more like angels..any creature or natural element more powerful than human or helpful to human is "admired & worshipped" by Hindus evn though not considered exactly God but a form of God's kindness made available to humans

peter the best place i know to find such information is; www'stephen-knapp.com/articles_to_read. this is an unbiased, factual site giving much information about christianity, Islam and buddhism's roots in the vedas, siddha yoga, vedanta and hinduism. There is but one God called by the many names, some call the attributes of God, such as Lakshami, the goddess of wealth. Shiva, brahma, Krishna, Indra, Rama, Vishnu, Ganish and Skanda, also see Sahasranama. (thousand names)

Kali is said to wipe away delusion and the decapetated heads you see on her don't mean she's horrible but a goddess for enlightining people. Read about some of the Indian Sages of the last two centuries devoted to her. They are very inspiring tales
