In reality modern medical science has no clue what nature intended it for but they THINK it may have been part of the immune system. There are several small organs that we really don't have a clue on. "Back in the Day", when people lived in caves and ate raw meat it MAY HAVE BEEN larger and helped fight off parasites in the raw meat. Or it could have helped break down vegetable matter. But since we moved UPTOWN and no longer live that lifestyle, we don't really use it any longer although we still have it, just in case. As we really start studying the human body we are starting to unlock some of its secrets. We have only really be doing internal studies about 100 years or so. That is why they are starting to 'suspect' it may still be useful. Therefor, if possible, they try to leave it in.

I don't think so...I have heard that it releases a lubricant to the bowel.....I don't know if that is true, but I don't think anything in the body is useless, it was designed for a reason whether we know what the reason is or not. Humans don't yet understand fully how even a single cell functions....so it is obvious we were carefully designed and not a product of chance. Therefore there must be a reason for the appendix, whether known yet or not.

can they ever be sure of anything??
I mean its not so long ago that people died from lack of vitamin C because no one knew what scurvy was... it was a horrible disease and yet all it took was lemon juice or similar to protect against it...
others were left deformed with rickets (bendy weak bones when vitamin D is deficient in the diet)...

folic acid deficiency is linked to spina bifida .. if the mother does not have enough in her diet during pregnancy..
we are told the appendix was only used in the days when we ate grass...
but it is way possible that it has a function not yet understood by science... perhaps protecting your gut from food poisoning or even carcinogens..... .
The reason its supposed our appendix has no function is because we manage to survive without it when it has to be removed because of disease....
I am sure God gave us all our body bits for a reason.....

It's useful as a child: the bacteria living inside it help build up your immune system. It's when(if) these bacteria turn nasty it has to be removed. It's not vital; just helps.

"No" is right, though it seems to create more problems than it solves. It's really just a little dead-end alley right off the large intestine which is prone to encapsulating "whatsit" and becoming infected. Then it swells and bursts and leaks.... hmm... "whatsit" all over the place, leading to sepsis and systemic infection.
