He became a deist, which remains a philosophically defensible position within a rationalist framework.

Here's a quote from his Wikipedia article:

"In an interview with Joan Bakewell for BBC Radio 4 in March 2005[10], Flew restated his deism, with the usual provisos that his God is not the God of any of the revealed religions:

Q And certainly in America where you've been to lecture...
A Oh America, this is a very real phenomenon - oh yes. Part of Bush's second election success is due to this. And the unbelievers are absolutely furious, not believing that anyone with any intelligence could be anything but a Democratic voter.
Q What view do you take of what is happening in America - where presumably you're being hailed now as ... one of them?
A Well, too bad (laughs). I'm not 'one of them'. "

Flew actually made the best argument against religion in opinion. And my answer would be -fear. He was close to death and scared that was all there was.

It's sad because he'll always be remembered as a great scholar anyway, even if he doesn't go to heaven or anything.

He has simply allowed for the use of the word "god" for the apparent intelligence underlying the phenomenal universe. But nothing about his stance indicates that such a source has a personality or influence on the universe, and he strictly denies that the god of Abraham has any relationship to his conception. I think he says he is a deist. Most theists, however, would not accept his concept as applying to any personal deity, which makes it atheistic.

Who knows? People do change their minds; life tends to take us in directions we never thought possible.
Maybe he got his pee-pee stuck in a door;
Usually people yell "theres no God", and then when something really terrible happens, the same person will say "Oh, God, help me".
Right after 9/11 the churches around ground zero were full, standing room only;
it only took a few months for that to wear off.
Goes to show that as soon as disaster happens, everybody runs to this God that doesn't exist.

It has to happen. Are you saying it's a really big deal that someone changes his beliefs so dramatically? Because if so you REALLY ought to check out which way the majority of the traffic is flowing, friend...

Why do Christians always use personal anecdotes for proof?

I don't know his story, but... probably for the same reason Darwin recanted his views on his death bed...TIMES UP! Where do you want to be after struggling through life trying to believe and prove to yourself there is no God! Futility! Death is eventual for all earthlings, eh? The fear of God is the begining of Wisdom! HE is patient, forgiving and kind,...and just none the less! Include Him and He will include you! All He asks is just a little faith, so then pray that He would give you your answers and be astonsished of His great grace and love for you! He is not far, a humble and contrite heart He will not refuse...
