I have MetLife dental through my employer and I qualify for some assistance on braces, but how much should I expect my monthly payments to be? How much does one typically pay for braces on a monthly schedule?

My son had braces from 2003-5 and I paid $200.00 per month. The total was $4600.00 and once I paid in full the subsequent visits were no additional charge. I then had to submit for reimbursement to my insurance.

I live in New Jersey, which has a high cost of living and many items in this part of the country are more expensive than elsewhere, so I am unsure whether that effects the price of orthodontia.

It depends where you live and the length of the care you would need. I was quoted close to $5,000 for each of my twins (yikes).

Dental insurance will typically pay about $1,000 of the fee, but you generally need to pay it out to the orthodontist first, then get reimbursed by the insurance company.

The best way to figure out the monthly payment is to estimate the braces fee high...and I would consider 5,000 to be high. Then, for example, if the treatment will go on 3 years, just divide the full price by 36 months. Some dentists will charge interest, some won't.

You should have a Treatment Plan drawn up, that will lay it all out for you - the monthly payment amount, how long they expect the treatment to last, any additional fees, the estimated amount your insurance will pay, and so on. Make sure a Treatment Estimate is sent into your insurance company, so you will have a better idea, from the INSURANCE COMPANY, how much you will really end up paying.

As a side note,
If you have wisdom teeth that need removal, if they are impacted (coming in sideways or tilted, under your gums) then you will do better to have that put on your medical insurance, which generally covers impacted wisdom teeth removal (much better than dental insurance will)

The best way to figure out how much your monthly payments will be is first see an orthodontist to determine how much braces will cost. They can determine how much your insurance company will pay and then from their divide by the number of months you will have to wear braces. At some locations, financing is available where you can get a company like www.carecredit.com or capitalone to finance and you pay them. I am not sure if its cheaper to finance or do monthly payments through the orthodontist office. If you are looking for low monthly payments, you can deduct from what the insurance pays and put down a down payment. Good luck!!!

The only way you can 'know for sure' what your monthly payments would be is to ask your orthodontist. If you can, ask several orthodontists what they would charge you and what the 'monthly payments' would be with the type of insurance you have ... but I'd choose neither the least expensive or the most expensive, but somewhere 'in the middle' because the chances are that you'll get 'better care' from the 'middle' than from at either end.

ask the orthodontist what the total charge should be and how many months the braces will be on. divide the charge by the number of months and you should have a pretty good idea. i'm sure you already knew to do that but since you asked...

oh, and i paid $122/mo for my daughter's braces, if that helps you at all.

It will depend on how much the insurance is covering, how long they will be on . For my daughter it was 18 months 0 coverage at 182.00 a month..with 10% discount. We paid them in full and saved a total of 25% off for paying in full...the cost of braces are from 3000.00 and up, depends what you need.
