Why Can't I Throw Rice at a Wedding?

Question

You people do know that IT DOES NOT HURT BIRDS? Rice is a natural seed that grows in the wild and birds eat it. Where rice is stored, birds eat it. You don't see hundreds of dead birds around a rice silo!

So why then do the vast majority of people believe that if birds eat the relatively small amount of rice left on the ground after a wedding that they will somehow explode in a burst of feathers?

Are all people really that stupid?

Yes, people really do believe it will hurt birds, even though it will not. But also, it can be messy. Who wants to clean that up? Why should you leave the mess for the maintenance staff at your ceremony site?

If you like the look of rice, but don't want the mess, ther eis now confetti you can buy that dissolves in water--so the next rain shower, or a couple of minutes with a hose, can whisk the mess away, no problem.

I'd never heard that before. No rice won't hurt the birds, but a lot of venues will not allow rice or confetti because it is hard to clean up. When I got married, it was not allowed at the church (because of the mess), but it was allowed at the reception hall. As to your last question "Are all people really that stupid?" The answer is no, but intelligent people are greatly out numbered!

You shouldn't throw rice because it makes a mess. In this litigious society, if someone slides on the rice and gets hurt, it will be the church/halls fault. Also, when it rains it gets slippery and may cause falls. Property owners don't want to be responsible for cleaning it up.
Why would you ask if all people are really that stupid when the majority of people don't believe that urban legend?

its the white rice that hurts the birds not wild rice. the bleach in the white rice is what causes harm not the rice it self.birds do eat wild rice that hasn't been processed.. .. so throw wild unprocessed rice and you will be OK , or throw bird seeds or rice that is bird safe that can be found at walmart its heart shaped and looks like rice and has a very sweet smell to it.. try that and have fun.

I too had heard that it would hurt the birds. I think it boils down to the church or wherever the wedding took place, not wanting to clean up the mess.

Oh, I thought you meant why can't you specifically throw rice at a wedding. And I wondered if it was because your arm hurt, or you had no arms at all. Both those would be pretty good reasons why you couldn't throw rice.

Well if rice attracts birds, birds poop, and who wants bird poop on their nice cloths or wedding dress.

Most people don't throw rice just because it is messy and, well, i'm pretty sure that it would take forever to decompose
