Wouldn't brag about it too much to your GF's dad!!! You could probably get along alright if
you can get ahold of some Military Field
Manuals from a Library or go to a Barnes & Nobel Book store and sort of read up on some
Military Books. Just a suggestion!! Also go to
a Army-Navy Surplus Store in your area, because they usually have books on Military
survivor techniques and weapons.
Otherwise, you will have very serious conflicts!!

Military Veteran: means I am a veteran of military service.
Self-Proclaimed Military: means you have proclaimed yourself to be what you are not.
And that can get you in to real trouble.
Try proclaiming yourself to be a police officer, or President of the United States and you will see what I mean.

About 15 years ago I was sitting in a bar talking with a guy I knew who was a Ranger. We were talking about respect, and how Rangers feel about people that didn't go to Ranger school, or civilians, and he said it best. He said that in order to get his respect you had to "Just show me that you aren't medeocre."
This is a really good rule, and most of the military people I know follow it, to one extent or another. I respect the janitors at Disney World, because they keep the place really really clean. They are work hard and they are good at what they do. I respect them a lot more than I respect a bad lawyer or a medeocre doctor. I respect a hard working NCO a lot more than I do an O-6 who can't get his job done.
As you can see, respect is about what you do and how well you do it... not what you put on your buisness card, or what sort of title you invent for yourself.
"Self-proclaimed military" tells me that you want to be able to talk about military and milita topics, but you don't have what it takes to actually do the "shut up and soldier, soldier" thing.
I can not think of a something more certian to cause REAL military people to loose all respect for you than that. Bascily you are trying to get for free what the real military people EARN.
Self-Proclaimed Military?
Sheesh... why not just come out and say "Wannbe Looser" and be done with it?

"Self-proclaimed military" pretty sure that's a federal misdemeanor under the Stolen Valor Act of 2013. That is if you claim to have any "Self-proclaimed military honors". Just a friendly warning from an actual active duty service member. I'd watch out.

No one who has never served has earned the right to call themselves military. End of discussion.
As to "Self-proclaimed military", what on god's green earth does that mean? That you own a set of army surplus combats and pre-worn combat boots, a few pieces of old webbing and have a buzz cut? That you are full of military trivia, that you might even speak some of the linguo? To me, really, it doesn't mean sweet dick all. I'm doing my time in the service, I have earned the right to call myself military. A right that is not god-given but earned by devoting years of one's life to the rigors of military life.
I would shut up about that Self-proclaimed crap if I were you. And really, I think that this girl deserves a lot better than a poseur such as yourself and I'm willing to bet dollars for donuts that her old man would think the same should he know the truth.
Speaking the linguo and knowing the background stuff doesn't make you a soldier, self-proclaimed or not. It's the tempering of a man's (or woman's) heart and soul by military service that makes the soldier. And that is something you do not have.

Self-proclaimed military, I see your a militant-anti government person-uh? I would not put your sorry excuse of a person in the same category as those brave men and women who actually put there self in the line of danger for a cause! So I would say yes talk to anyone that is a REAL veteran or active military and hope to what ever god you pray to that you come out of that conversation alive!!! 8 year vet here, of several conflicts!

What exactly is a "Self-Proclaimed Military" Is that where you buy a gun and consider yourself an member of the armed services? Just because you own a set of cammies doesn't mean you've earned the right to consider yourself a part of the military. Yea more than likely if her dad heard you say something like that he'll probably think your an idiot. And since no dad wants an idiot dating their daughter...I'd keep that **** on the down low

Self-proclaimed military? To me, a military veteran, that seems like a wanna-be that either couldn't take the discipline of a real live military unit, or was too psycho to join a real military unit. I'm pretty sure that if you were dating my daughter, you'd not be coming to my house.

I'm with mangy coyote, I am a veteran, If I had a daughter and she brought home a self proclaimed military thing such as you. You would find the door hitting you in your self proclaimed butt.
