I just got the microsoft digital image anniversary edition software and I want to know if I can take an image and turn it to black and white yet leaving some things in color.

As previous answerer said, ALWAYS work with a copy of your image, not the original.

Second, if the program has capability of layers, first open the image, then make a copy as a layer. Turn the layer into a b/w image. Add another layer, put transparency on second (b/w) layer to 50% and using the bottom layer as a guide, colour in the parts you want to. Delete bottom layer, merrge top two layers, and you have your desired result!

make a copy of the foto you wanna work on, so you have a backup in case something goes wrong. Install the image software and play around with it. You'll find the answers soon enough.
