I think it can be a good thing, but it's not for everyone. I'm a homeschooler, and I can tell you that sometimes my kids drive me bananas when I'm teaching them.

My five reasons it can be a good thing are:
1.You know what your children are being taught.
2. Your children will get to hear different views, not just what's in the text book.
3. Children will have opportunities that kids in P.S won't receive.Like having more time for extra curricular actives.
4. Children will get to be around people of all ages, not just kids their age.
5. You get to watch them first hand grow and learn.

Homeschooling can fail if:

1. The parents are alcoholic or drug addicts and are using homeschooling as an excuse for not sending their children to school.
2. The parents don't know how to teach. Just because you can do something, does not mean you can teach it to someone else. I've know some fantastic subject matter experts that couldn't teach to save their life.
3. The parents have limited knowlege. Many homeschooled parents end-up enrolling their children in high school because they can't teach trig, chem, or some of the more advanced high school math and science courses.
4. The children become isolated from society and don't develop adequate social skills.
5. The parents do not have adequate financial resources for books, materials, and equipment.

Best case scenario for homeschooling would be the occasional 14 year old who enrolls in college.

Worst case scenarion for homeschooling: Andrea Yates.

Not to sound wishy-washy, but it really does depend on the situation. I have seen "homeschooling" abused, basically used as a way for students to drop out before they're legally allowed to do so. I have taught students who were homeschooled prior to reaching high-school age, some of whom took awhile to adjust, some of whom adjusted rather quickly. Of those students, I would say several had superior vocabularies, but may have lacked in other areas--such as writing. However, I currently have a 9th grade student who was homeschooled and while his writing needs work, he does seem to have a vastly superior knowledge of history compared with his peers. (He also has a vastly superior knowledge of the bible, but I guess that's neither here nor there.) I think it really depends on the situation and the fact that some parents probably emphasize the disciplines in which they are most interested!

Yes, definitely.

1. I have found the lasagna I make myself and care about is better than what I get in restaurants. Same with people who care enough about their kids to teach them themselves instead of turning them over to the socialist indoctrination center babysitting service where recess is now outlawed, and kid are labeled with a poltically correct "disease" if they squirm to much while in captivity all day with some impatient hag. Showing signs of normalcy or masculinity could result in your child being drugged (legalized child abuse).

2. No liberal agenda promoted.

3. No Homosexual Agenda promoted.

4. He or she will be brighter at age 7 than most graduates.

5. No sex ed or cucumber condomization taught. Well, I guess that's part of the liberal agenda and perhaps some of these overlapped, but I think I've given about 5 reasons overall.

I think it's not good; generally a parent is not broadly educated enough to provide a well-rounded education for a child. I also believe that there are not enough opportunities for socialization. I don't have five reasons - but I think those two reasons are enough for me, and I would never consider home-schooling my child unless it was an absolute necessity.
