Wasn't the USA a culture that was originally based on freedom and basic civil rights for all? Weren't we WRONG when our laws allowed the hateful and ignorant treatment of African-Americans... who- at one time- weren't allowed to drink from the same water fountain as white people? Whatever happened to live and let live? What ever happened to separation of church and state?

I agree completely, I am not homosexual myself but I can relate because I see discimination in other ways. You are right that this country was said to be founded on personal freedoms, however it seems that the only freedoms that were really faught for were the freedoms to choose what sect of christianity one may choose to follow. The people who came here for freedom were being told that they could only be catholic, and they did not like it because they believed differently and wanted to worship in the ways they saw fit. These are the same people however who persecuted and discrinated against Native Americans and even had the audasity to hold a hearing to determine whether or not they had a soul (because if they did not it would not be a sin to slaughter them). Ironically thier idea of religious freedom did not seem to cover any other religions rights to exist which was the cause of the witch trials (which were not limited to witches, they included everyone that they did not like, that did not fit in and even those that did not agree with their religious beliefs, just like the people they had originally decided were oppressing them.)

Intollerance will always try to oppress love and it is important that we all make sure that this never happens, because it is the one thing this world will never have enough of but at the same time as long as the faintest remnant exists there will always be hope. Love is pure no matter what kind of love it is, where it comes from, or where it goes. Please continue by all means loveing whoever you love and make sure that your love continues to grow because love is never stagnant when it stops growing it diminishes make sure this never happens and remember that.

Ultimatly yes it would be nice if homosexual marriage was accepted but marriage should never determine the amount of love you have for someone it is after all just a vow to love and cherish someone and honor whatever other vows a couple decides to take, you can do this on your own without the blessing of the state. The law plays too big a part in our world when it starts to interfear in happy peoples relationships that are not anyone elses business to begin with.

Personally I don't have any problems with the gay community. I have a gay friend and I've never had a problem working with any of them. It's just their lifestyle that I don't approve of. No before everyone starts saying that I'm wrong for thinking the way that I do just listen to my argument. I am Christian above anything else, now I'm not overly religious, but the bible does state that homosexuality is wrong. Now I have two choices 1) I can choose to follow what God says or 2) I can choose not to listen to God's word to please the homosexual community. Those who claim to be real Christians tend to go with option #1. Now I'm not saying gays are bad people, I know for a fact that I am far from perfect. Gays or just like straight folks, some good and some are bad. Its just I to go with what the Bible says.

Now to discuss gay marriages. Personally I'm against it. But if I had to vote on the matter, I would choose for gays to have the right to get married. The reason being not everyone shares in my beliefs and it would be wrong to force that on someone else. If I was a Preacher or a Judge, I wouldn't perform the ceremony. But if gays could find someone who would, so be it. That would be between God and who ever performed the ceremony. I'll always respect the person, just not the lifestyle.

Why wont people stop crying about this and get over it the civil rights movement took place before most of the folk who claim it as a issue were even born. Second what is the point of gays joining in marriage they cant have children with one another and plus what good does it do for them none they would just raise the already sorry divorce rate in this country higher. Church and State are separate try living in Iran or many of the other Muslim controlled country's and see what happens if your a non conformist. Pretty much grow up and stop blaming folks for your issues and accept life is hard on everyone not just you and don't ever run this country down because we have alot of great folks fighting and dying for your right to run your ignorant mouth and crying all the time do something much more useful with your freedom.

We were wrong then and we are wrong now.

Slowly this country is living up to it's potential of having equal rights for everyone. Gay rights will take a little longer because of the Christian right. For some reason they still think that their religious views should be the law of the land.

it really is unlucky, yet some human beings nevertheless take the know others to inform them what the Bible says quite of having to understand it for themselves, exceptionally interior the unique Greek and Hebrew. The verse a tremendous variety of human beings pick to cite is from Leviticus. What the verse truly says is that "a guy shall no longer lie with a guy in a woman's mattress." this is the literal translation. Many scholars trust that this verse has no longer something to do with homosexuality in any respect, yet to maintain men "sparkling" as a woman will change into "unclean" for the period of her era... this is why it really is likewise an abomination to have sex such as her for the period of her era. Verses interior the hot testomony, even as translated from the unique Greek, are easily about male prostitution, exceptionally as practiced in idol worship, and pederasty (protecting youthful boys for sex). therefore, homosexuality, in and of itself, isn't a sin. genuinely gay sin, as all of us do, yet their state of being -- having been made by potential of God with alternatives in course of an identical gender -- isn't a sin. for my area, if God made 2 men in touch in one yet another, then their union might want to be reason for social gathering, as no longer something is more effective pleasing to God than the starting to be a member of of two in His call.

Flaming sword: Marriage was supposedly laid down by God, but fortunately we have what is called seperation of church and state. So, going by your own arguement, it should be legal.

Oh yeah, then let's all follow Washington's (state) example and see if we can't mandate that married couple have a child within 3 years, or else. Marriage isn't solely for procreation.

Homosexuality is a sin, being African-American is not!!! Homosexuality is a choice, someone's race is not. Homosexuals do have the same rights as straight people but marriage was designed by God to be between a man and a woman, not two of the same gender. You may end up having the state approve of same-sex "marriage" but God will not bless it. He opposes sin, not sanctions it! It is not a seperation of church and state issue. It's a heart issue.

Some of these responses are disgusting.

If we had the internet back when laws were passed to ban different-race marriages, we would have seen pretty much the same arguments in favor of the bans.

I agree. My life won't change at all if two people of the same sex marry. I guess what Christians are really saying, that if they were presented with the choice, well by golly, they would pick the wrong one and choose to be with their own sex. So, I guess in reality they are trying to say they are gay. Otherwise, I don't think it would bother them so much. Is that what you guys are saying?

Believe you me I will not marry a gay person and some do however, and do not find out until later that they married someone gay. Everyone in life have their own sex preferences.
