Whenever I open the backdoor to take the trash out of something, my cat will wait till I comeback to open the door and she will dart out! She is mostly indoors all the time, but when she runs out she will just hide everywhere. She likes to be out in the rain, too. Our fences our pretty short and im sure she could hop over, but she hasnt. Actually I just let her in from her two hour adventure out side in the rain. (we forgot about her :o) Why does he do this?

My 9 yr old neutered male used to be like that - will dash out the door if given the chance. He grew up in a place where he could be safely left outdoors... but when I moved, this is no longer an option (although I take him out on walks with a leash and he has an outdoor enclosure). I trained him not to dash out a door by buying cans of pressurized air computer cleaners. When I move towards the door to get out and he follows, I stop by the door and spray the air with the computer cleaner. The sharp "pssstttt" sound is enough to set him running the opposite direction. Then, when I am about to come inside the house, I open the door really carefully just a crack and spray the computer cleaner up in the air again. My cat absolutely detests the sound and he has come to associate the door with that unpleasant "psstttt" sound. After about a month, BOTH my cats will move away from the door if anyone walks towards it. So... no more dashing out!

She's an outdoors cat. Some cats like to be inside, some like to be outside and hunt. If she's not spayed, she may be looking for a hot tom. She'll eventfully learn how to climb the fence as cats do that.

They want ot mate, or get out of the house its boring, they also really enjoy hunting. I have always said cats don't really like being around humans all the time they are more wild than dogs. In the Wild cat world most are solo and don't travel in packs except lions, but all the others want to be alone and hunt

My cat is too. We only take her out on her harness and leash, but she always tries to sneak out the door every chance she gets. (yes she is spayed)

Its because cats are naturally outdoors animals. Do you think when God made felines, he kept them indoors? I dont think so...Just let your cat stay outside...He/she will be much happier.
