Was it the Victorian age? Rampant prostitution and disease because of sexual repression, how lovely.
Or was it the fifties? Where secrecy and shame was key. Everyone smoked like chimneys and drank like fish and popped pills,
no child molester was ever prosecuted, because the children were "making it up". And pulp fiction comics depicting rape and murder was acceptable. And in the south you could drink from a "whites only" water fountain?

Yeah, I get pretty tired of everyone talking about how humanity is destroying itself also. Those people are just pessimistic. Life is better now than it has ever been...people just refuse to accept it and only concentrate on what they feel are problems.

The good old days was when I could leave the doors and windows open and unlocked in the summer. There is never a positive without a negative. But being young I focused more on the good things. Fortunately I was raised in a very LIBERAL neighborhood that included blacks, Hispanics, Christian and non Christians. And we saw no differences, bore no grudges. We actually knew our neighbors, had block parties where everyone was invited, thought nothing about running out in the night in our undies or pj's to look for a child that was not home on time. Did not judge anyone for anything. Helped our neighbors if someone was sick or had died. Didn't have to worry about things like AIDS and didn't worry about drinking from the same glass as someone else. Yes, my parents smoked and drank, but few of the kids took up smoking and none of us (that I am aware of) became alcoholics. Well those are the memories I cherish and occasionally long for. Seem our biggest concern was the "Cuban missile crisis", I never did understand that one, like ducking under a desk was going to save you from nukes. Go figure.

The good ole days are yet to come. But your question outlines very well how there is much more to deal with today than at any other time. Just the other day 600 from the US were being investigated in that pedo ring. You can't go 24 hours with a child molesting of some type. More people are dying (or wish they were dead) from drugs, STDs, wars and skirmishes. It's the time we live in now and you just deal with it. Each period has it's good and bad. But I think I would have felt much safer walking downtown NY city many, many years ago than I would today.

The only time I use the term "the good ol days" is when I'm refering to me being a child. I would play all day without having to worry about paying bills and whatnot.

There is no time in history better than now. I read through history books and am thankful I was born in the year I was.

I read your response to that one question----you got a thumbs up from me!

You are quite right. But it's awfully fun to think that in the "good ole days" things were better. That way we can bemoan what is happening now and do nothing about it. "Ah, the world is getting worse and worse ... it was meant to be!"
