I have a viral infection and have been feeling ill for the past week with a sore throat, flu symptoms etc but now I have small mouth ulcers and a sore tongue. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of them or ease the pain? They are killing me!

Warm salt water will help a little. Warm water with hydrogen peroxide will help a little. DO NOT COMBINE THE SALT AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. Herpicin L or Orajel will help a little, probably a little better that the peroxide. But if it is viral, nothing will get rid of it. It will go away on its own. Viruses, technically, are not living. Therefor you can not kill a virus. Antibiotics do NOT work on viruses. That is why you should not self medicate when you have a cold. If it is viral the meds do nothing but lower your immunity a little. If it is bacterial antibiotic will work like a charm, unless it is a new super resistant strain. If it was, you'd already be dead or almost there so we can rule that out.
Your best bet is to just wait it out. Herpicin L was formulated to help reduce viral outbreaks, so that will probably be the best for you. It won't make it go away but it will make it less painful and help it go away a little faster.

One home remedy is to wet a tea bag and use it as a compress on the area. Cooled chamomile tea offers quick relief - in between painful swallowings of food - with its anti-inflammation properties. Gargle with it, or swish it around your mouth and drink it. Try adding natural honey (the propolis in some honey could help in healing) if you prefer the taste, or need the calories.

Some people benefit from using the over-the-counter topical gel Bonjela, which contains choline salicylate. Choline salicylate is a local analgesic that helps to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with mouth ulcers.

Some people have reported great benefit from eating milk products such as yogurt and buttermilk that contain the active cultures L. Acidophilus.

I'm suffering from them too at the moment... afraid I have no miracle cure.. but will check in on your answers to see if anything works..

All I would say is that I've found Bonjella to be the most painful thing in the world for them! It stings like mad to put on and wears off almost immediately.. I find it better to just rinse my mouth out with mouthwash... it'll sting for a second but reduces the pain for longer than bonjella.

I used to use Rinstead pastels when i was younger but haven't seen them around in ages... they didn't work overly well unless you put them on the actual area but they tasted quite nice (I think).

Now I just drink plenty of water and make sure there is a glass of water around if I wake up in the middle of the night.

they are usually a result of poor diet though so plenty of fruit and veg will help clear them up.

Good luck :0)

Bonjela!

Also, rinsing with warm salt water can help (but don't swallow because you won't be able to get the salt taste out for ages).

Try gargling with soluble asprin.

Failing that, if its really bad you could phone NHS direct or go on their website. They might be able to give you some advice.

Put a dab of salt directly onto them. You need to have a lot of vitamin C to help clear this up.
