Thinking that a different mouthpiece is going to help your range is somewhat of a myth. Initially your range may be boosted a little, but then it will drop back down once your embrochure gets used to the mouthpiece. You typically will gain only a few half steps in overall range. My range is basically the same on my bright and dark mouthpiece.

What your looking for is a mouthpiece that will brighten your tone. This way your sound can cut through the rest of the ensemble without having to work as hard. In this way your range and endurance becomes stronger. I can play a double F on both mouthpieces, but I'll get tired a lot faster on my darker mouthpiece.

I'd highly recommend staying with the same rim size. That way your muscles don't have to reform a different embrochure. You'll want a shallower more V shaped cup with a smaller backbore. The smaller backbore will give you more resistance and allow your air to work more for you. Most major mouthpiece companies have a comparison chart to help you out. Sticking with the same rim also really helps when you have to change back to a more "legit" sounding mouthpiece for a concert band sound. The trick to working with one of these mouthpieces is focusing your air into as small and fast of a stream as possible.
